Slabs: Preservation of matter?

by 0gb.us » Fri Nov 30, 2012 15:25

Something's been bothering me about slabs. I wasn't going to say anything, but a similar issue with sandstone was fixed, so maybe this could be fixed for 0.4.4 as well.

Let's say you have six cobblestone, and you convert it all to slabs. You now have six cobblestone slabs. Now, you stack all six on top of one another. The slabs combine, and you now have three cobblestone. What happened to the other three?

I see two easy ways to fix this. The recipe could be altered to yield six slabs instead of three, so three cobblestone becomes six slabs, which become three cobblestone again. I think this would be the easiest and best way, as it literally just requires one character be changed in stairs/init.lua Alternatively, the code that causes slabs to combine could be removed.

My sister also had an idea. She plays Minecraft, and from her description, it sounds like in that game, placing two slabs on top of on another crates a special double slab node, which yields two slabs when mined.

If there are no plans to fix this, I don't really mind. I just don't want to regret not bringing it up in time to be fixed for the release.

Cheers!

I believe stairs+ fixed this by stopping the slabs from combining at all. I prefer that, because the way they combined was really annoying; they combined when you placed a slab on the side of another one, so it was impossible to build slab platforms and making a nice roof of slabs was difficult.

This is fixed in current upstream.

For me I made craftings to make two slaps one stone. You still loose material, but I like that when playing survival. You have to think before you do craft this and that. In creative mode you have infinite stuff anyway.

Latest (actually, from 2 months ago) Stairs+ restores slab combining (the fixed way). :)

Stairs+ also gives you six slabs though, preventing the loss of matter.
