grass not growing

I've noticed areas I have placed a lot of default:dirt aren't changing from default:dirt to default:dirt_with_grass like it used to. Was this changed recently or is it a bug? It used to be that if I placed a large chunk of dirt out in the open it would be grass covered in a couple minutes.

I'm running 0.4.4, current (as of a week or so ago) minetest_game

I have habitat, farming, farming_plus, and nature mods installed and didn't know if those were known to cause problems.

I noticed something similar in my vanilla game:
When you come close to a chunk all dirt_wtih_grass in a certain height turns back to dirt. This happens when loading the map and go close to the chunk. You can actually see how the dirt_with_grass turns back.

I have also seen it on zegton server running on 0.4.3.
So the bug is older than 0.4.4.

Do you have legacy installed? I removed legacy because I wasn't using an old map, and didn't think I needed legacy. But legacy has three important aliases in it that interact with the C++. Two control the grass growth and death, and the other specifies which node should be treated as a sapling, and grow into a tree. Some of the other aliases may be important as well, I didn't do any major testing.

I've noticed that too. It doesn't tend to matter much in open areas, which is where I usually see it, but it just happened in a walled-in base, where there's no sun to regrow the grass.

It's just a guess, but could that have to do with loaded chunks? I know trees grow flat sometimes, if pressed against a line between map chunks. Maybe the default:dirt_with_grass reverts to default:dirt because the air above it isn't loaded. It would explain why it only happens at certain elevations.

I think legacy is installed, I'll remove it and see what happens.

I haven't seen this happen, but your explanation makes a lot of sense.

Yeah, similar to the invisible walls caused by lag. But this is more like an invisible ceiling caused by being out of range of the player.

Did anybody find a solution for the grass not growing? I deleted the legacy mod, but it didn't seem to change anything.

Shouldn't dirt be an abm? If there's grass around then turn into grass
