I think iron tends to spawn in groups, with not all of the ore readily visible. I've found iron deposits that yeieded 17-20 ore each when I dug out the area.

Once I find one I mine out in all directions from it to see if others exist and luckily I found the motherload this past week. Oddly enough it was directly below my first ever house.
Since I've taken that shot I've found twice the amount. I'm working on just clearing out the cobble around it and then I'll mine it out.

My conclusion when reading this article:
1. Iron is a bit rare.
2. Iron should be better distributed over the map. The patches are too large. (Better 4 patches with 5 iron than 1 with 20)
3. It is unclear where you should mine to iron.

I have went like -1000 deep and it is very rare to find any iron :/
Mods make minetest even better and maybe getting better than minecraft with some time

I found tons of iron on Krays old server (tsundere.fi PORT:30001) and I wasn't deep and I found iron above ground, unless your only talking about the 0.4 version.

There's your problem, iron is mostly near the surface, only randomly placed as you get deep.
It looks like just finding iron is the first real challenge to this game.
