I'm running ubuntu 12.10. i updated mintest to latest, and played some multiplayer. when i try to start a game, i get and error saying, "moderror: required common mods...(list of mods)... could not be found

You need to install the common pseudo-game:

Install in $path_share/games/common.

where is this. usr/games?

EDIT: Note that if you compile with RUN_IN_PLACE under Linux, the paths are the same as for Windows.
