Mouse lag in Windows 7

by SpreadCrackers » Wed Nov 27, 2013 21:36

I just started playing Minetest, and I'm going to have to say the developers did a good job with it, and I'm glad they're using OpenGL instead of DirectX. I think that using OpenGL without proper optimization causes mouse lag for Windows, as I'm assuming the game was programmed for the superior operating system known as Linux(which I would like to use, but, sadly, I had a few issues when trying to install it). I know it's not my framerate, because opening FRAPS told me I get 40-64 FPS. Is there any fix to this? Thank you.

Try disabling Aero (use the Windows Basic or Windows Classic theme)?

Didn't work in classic or basic. Calling it "mouse lag" is a bit inappropriate, if it helps. In fact, I recently noticed that it's not when i mouse my mouse, but just occasional hiccups in the game.

Try opening task manager then click on the processes tab right click on minetest.exe, select "set affinity" and remove the ticks from half the cores. If you have a quad core you will want to run minetest through two cores rather then all four. Think i know the lag spikes you are talking about, fairly sure it's windows interrupting minetest with background activity.

Hmm... I apparently have 7 CPU's. So far, all of attempts have failed. Which ones do you think should be active?

I would use 3 or 4 cores depending what runs fastest, with mine i have a 6 core so i un-tick 1,5 and 6 for windows ect and have 2,3,4 for minetest but that's what works best for me.

If set affinity does not improve anything then it is not what i was thinking, worth a try anyway.

That's weird. Back when I was on Windows 7 I had a 4 core with HT (= 8 threads) CPU and didn't have to do anything...

Did the same thing when i was using XP, hardware is good and runs anything i have without problems yet with minetest i get lag spikes even though the CPU usage is only around 17%. As soon as i set affinity there is no spikes and runs smooth, has done this since the early days of minetest.

At first i thought it was my older rig but was still there when i upgraded, so i thought it may have been an XP thing, nope was still there with win7. Two completely different hardware set ups and two operating systems later i just thought must have been windows in general.

Anyway works for me and is worth a try

When testing win builds in wine I noticed pretty long (1/2 a second or so) freezes when digging nodes.
