I found an infinite steel source, where 4 steel ingots can be crafted into 10:

steel > strut > steel scraps > iron ore > iron dust > steel...

I don't think those things are in default...

They aren't, probably they are part of a mod. Maybe it was Technic. johnDoe should post this in whatever mod or mods threads are causing this.
