I've compiled minetest on fedora 20 but when I try to
launch it I get the following:

Code: Select all: Warning: The library version of the Irrlicht Engine (1.8.1) does not match the version the application was compiled with (1.8.0). This may cause problems.

which is strange being that the only version of irrlicht install is irrlicht-1.8.1-2

has any one else encountered this problem

any help is appreciated

Try installing the development package for irrlicht-1.8.1

that was bug in irrlicht IMHO. http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/2013/12/irrlicht-1-8-1-makefile-version-number-fix/

The closest I came to finding a solution in that thread was someone
changing distros
