Hello
I had massive Problems with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to because some Libraries outdated and incompatible.
I had to install the Libraries by Hand and compile minetest by myself.

The best you can do is to Upgrade Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 not only because of minetest and its dependencies but of most of the Packets to.

I have 5000 installed Packets Kubuntu and had no Problems with the Update.

Hope that helps,
JPR

Hello
Ubuntu is not Windows.
If your computer can run 12.04 it can run 14.04 to, if it can not minetest would not either. because minetest needs more computing power than Ubuntu.
have Fun,
JPR
