in my opinion the amount of light, that a plant needs to grow is too high.
when i have wet soil in the darkness (cave or night) and have a seed on it, it doesn't even grow when i have a torch directly next to or over it.
it only grows, when i have a super glow glas directly over the plant.

It's probably more a design decision than a bug: you're not supposed to use torchlight only to make plants grow.

Those plants were exposed to open sky so they got sunlight. I think the torchlight was just for the workers to see at night.
