child safety

by GG1850 » Thu May 29, 2014 12:40

My 9 yo daughter snuck onto minetest/buildcraft last night - something happened as she is very upset this am. It's very strange and she's being secretive about it. Is there a way to scan back to her dialogue with the person with whom she was interacting? She apparently gave her name and some location info and who knows what else. I was on using her ID this am and saw that the person in question was asking for 'real names' and where the players live - and the children were providing this info. Clearly we were outsmarted by our child to be on this during the night, and that won't happen again, but hoping we can review the conversation. Thank you for any suggestions. I can provide the port and user id of those involved if you are able to help.

You can ask the owner of the server she was on about chat logs.

To my knowledge, chat and private messages are not logged in the debug log by default. Most servers do keep a log or are even connected to an IRC server where logging may exist. Thus, if this happened on a public server, and not via private /msg, you ought to contact the server owner and see if anything can be done. The server owner may as well keep an eye on what is happening in chat and intervene if something goes wrong.

It *might* just be another young child which is beeing curious. But one never knows :-( Young kids often seem to want to make friends with anyone whose name they read for the first time. And there's a reason for the rule saying "this is not a dating service" on some servers - some players (probably very young ones) try to abuse it for that - with all the problems that may arise from there.

Your daughter will get older. It will happen again sooner or later. Better make sure she knows how to deal with such situations and will know she can get help and aid from you in case something went wrong.

I sometimes ask players how old they are when they're misbehaving or behaving odd. I won't expect the same amount of good behaviour from a child than from an adult - children are young and want to play and especially don't realize that their behaviour may be slightly annoying to others. I've met some children whose reply was "my parents told me not to tell my age to strangers" - a perfectly good answer which told me that it's probably a child (=so be more tolerant), and which did not provide any unnecessary private information. Perhaps you can find a similar solution for your child.

Chat and /msg is logged in log level 2 which I think is the default.

Thank you for the suggestions. How do i find out the owner of the server? On the game itself it was difficult to even locate a 'contact me' link, so I ended up here. I assume that the other person was a child, but it's odd that they were up in the late night hours (midnight, and shortly after). She said the child was from Hawaii, might be the case. I will be cautious - but want to also look into it b/c she was so upset this a.m.

It's not always possible.

Some server owners will write it in the MotD (the message you see when you join the server, in the chat).

Some will not say anything. You can use the /privs <name> command to check a player's privileges: players with administrative privileges will generally have the server or ban privileges.
