Now that Minetest allows scripting, I decided to try the mods created by other users. I made a list with the ones I really like, and which I believe should be part of Minetest by default. The purpose of this topic is for everyone to mention the mods they believe should be included, and post their opinion on what should be changed before doing so. Also, I think it would make sense if a moderator could make this thread sticky, in case it can be used for official reference.
I'll start with my own suggestions. Note that the finished / unfinished tags are the stage in which I believe each mod is, and might be incorrect. Let me know in a post if I am, and I'll change them if the forum still allows me. Also let me know if you've tested a mod and believe it's stable, so I can correct that too. Here they are:
Throwing (Bow and Arrow) (untested, almost finished) - Implements a wooden bow that shoots arrows like the one in MC. Only objection is that it uses planks instead of sticks for crafting the bow. I couldn't test it myself (crashes on startup), but once it's ready I believe this should be in.
[MOD] villages (tested, finished) - Adds a few types of houses to the world generator, similar to villages in Minecraft. Tested and it appears to work fine.
Paintings Mod (tested, almost finished) - Allows crafting paintings and placing them on walls (uses a different picture each time). Apart from someone reporting a bug with paintings being positioned incorrectly below ceilings, this looks very good and ready. Confirmed tested by its author.
Magic Lantern (untested, finished) - Allows crafting a lamp which adjusts based on daytime. No such thing in Minecraft, but it's a pretty neat idea. It seems to be ready, although I haven't tested it.
[MOD] nature_pack-0.2.0 [now with climbable vines!] (previously [MOD] Flowers) (tested, finished) - Different types of flowers spawn around the world, and you can pick them up and plant them elsewhere. Only thing I don't like is the seed (should be groups of flowers in areas rather than a flower spawning every here and there), but other than that I tested and it works great. Vines and other items are also added, and this mod is a dependency for other mods listed here.
[MOD] Animals 1.0.0 (let them breed) (tested, finished) - Probably one of the biggest mods so far. It adds different types of creatures to the world, which spawn randomly on grass. You can attack and kill them, yielding the player items such as meat. They currently use sprites (6 directions), which look great until Minetest will support meshes. This is one I'd really like to see included soon.
[Mod][Experimental] Doors (minecraftlike) (untested, almost finished) - Adds doors like those in Minecraft. I didn't get all necessary dependencies to test it, but it looks good to me. Only thing I disagree with is the crowbar item, which I believe is too modern for the default Minetest (and useless if you can't do more with it).
[MOD] Farming (tested, finished) - Just looked at this mod earlier. I tested it, and it appears to do what you'd expect it to and it looks good. The hoe needs better graphics IMO, and also to lose durability.
That's pretty much it for now. There are other mods which are nice... but I either didn't see them, don't like them, or don't believe they match Minetest's theme by default. An example is the fire mod, which is a good idea but looks weird and I'd like to see it done differently. Otherwise, I would love to see the mods I listed included soon. Feel free to post your own list and vote for default mods.
