[Mod] Waterican [waterican]

by gravgun » Sat Oct 31, 2015 14:15

Image Waterican

Watering cans for Minetest that make your plants grow faster (among other things).

Use it to:
  • Image Wet soils
  • Image Speed up crop growth
  • Image Grow cactus and papyrus
  • Image Grow trees
  • Image Spread grass
  • Image Convert dry grass to normal grass
  • Put out fires
It works on any plant that is registered using the farming mod or has a compatible registering scheme. Same for soils.
Only spreads and converts (dry) grass from the default mod.
Only works on fire from the fire mod.

Crafting: Needs the bucket mod to be crafted.
Image Note: this isn't the only crafting recipe!
Available in wood, cobblestone, copper, steel, gold, mese and diamond, as well as a creative (non-wearing) version. The better the material you use, the less refills you'll have to do. The bucket itself is not consumed, only the water in it.

Usage: just left click. Normal left click has an effect area of 3*3, and sneaking while using the Waterican reduces its effect to the pointed node (1x1 area).
Refill by clicking on a water source block.

Download: v1.2 (17KB ZIP)
Git repo: https://github.com/gravgun/waterican
Dependencies: Minetest 0.4.11+ or so, I think. No hard mod requirements.
Suggested mods: default, bucket, farming, fire (you should already have these anyway)
License: GPLv3+
Installing: uncompress the waterican directory in your mods folder

4 diamonds may be too expensive for a simple watering can ?
Very busy this year too, so do not expect me to be very active on the forum or in game. But I'm not about to drop Minetest forever :)

@Gael de Sailly: originally the recipe was with 6 <material> instead of 4, but I changed it before releasing as I deemed it too expensive.
4 diamonds is sort of expensive, but if you happened to have read what's written below, you'd know you can use all of minetest_game's default crafting materials, so you're free to use wood if you find diamonds expensive.

Actually I thought of this but didn't make the crafting recipe yet. And it should be quite expensive since you'd have no refill at all, I also thought about using diamond blocks and possibly even other metal blocks.

I would suggest stone option that wears down, and a diamond one doesn't

Stone Watericans already wears down, and as of now diamond ones does too, but take quite a long time before getting depleted. As cx384 suggested an expensive craft recipe with 2 buckets might be the best idea I think. Give your opinion.

You could also have a way to upgrade watering cans, by placing the previous version in place of the bucket for the higher teir one.

I like the idea but not the amount of cans added. Maybe two versions would be enough. The more expensive diamond one could be one that also contains a compartment for fertilizer and thus lets the plants grow even faster.
A list of my mods can be found here.

The wood and stone watercans don't really need to be in the upgrade system since their materials are plentiful and renewable.

The copper and higher ones could be set as upgradable in the mod settings to make things easier and customizable.

Check out how the watering can in my crops mod works: It's a tool that can be recharged by filling it with water, and then water plants:

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=11795

It may be a more natural method.
