Here is a mod I made a little while ago. It lets you make bricks out of many default nodes.
It has 8 styles and 2 colors for the mortar lines.

Make a machine and open it up. Put your block in and click the style you want.

Depends - Default

Nice, reminds me of the Minecraft mod Chisel.

Can the blocks be converted back to the original, or to other versions?

They do not convert back. I might consider it in the future.
I have a chisel mod. It is mychisel. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=13104

I was referring to the Minecraft mod chisel, which doesn't carve blocks, but allows them to be converted to re-textures of the same block (similar to the functionality of this mod).

The sandstone brick looks very inviting. If it shows up on a server, I'm sooner or later going to use it for some building purposes. Some of the other mortar lines look a bit too small-scaled for a regular MT world. But the one on the top right looks very good.

It all depends on what style you put on what block.

The tops and bottoms have different patterns also. The small bricks has a square pattern. Below is the tiny bricks on yellow wool. You are looking at the top of the blocks.
