Why do mods need licences?

This makes no sense to me,
this is a community game, we're sharing this stuff anyways.

Different people may have different terms for sharing their mods; for example:
  • Some may want credit (CC-BY)
  • Some may want a similar license used for redistribution (CC-BY-SA, GPL, AGPL, LGPL)
  • Some may not want their work used commercially (CC-BY-NC)
  • Some may not care at all what you do (CC0, WTFPL)
  • Its unlikely and hasn't happened but is possible that someone might release a proprietary mod (lua can be compiled).

If you really don't care at all what people do with your work, release it under something like CC0. If you still want credit or other rights, I recommend another CC licence, as they are flexible and easy to understand.
