If this works, it could be really nice.
I advise you to use an entity to display the item so you can change its texture easily.

But It is WTFPL, so you free to, make the code for it.

I don't know if I should give you credit because I made all of it, but here is a working item frames mod:

Use /giveme itemframes:frame to try it, right click on an item frame to put your current item inside.

The mod and all the definitions say "itemflame", did you mean "itemframe?

Rather than frame_2, I'd call it frame_steel; that's more descriptive and would make it easier to understand.

It fine the Licence is WTFPL so if you like you can take over the mod.
