Try variator. It adds in more variations of blocks, doors and some new weapons.

If you want to, why not try my
Jungle Tools Mod. It adds a new set of tools as well as a unique-ish grinder.

These are some of the newest mods. I don't know what you are talking about.

Modding has slowed down though, i would have to say the fact that most common mods have been done and done 10 times over. Adding new node's, weapons/tools or slightly modifying an existing mod just doesn't create that much attention anymore. Therefor most just create these simple mods for themselves, no point re-inventing the wheal. Exhausted ideas, any mod worth releasing you have to create something ground breaking or completely original.
Also keep in mind some only use minetest as a stepping stone to programing then move onto work related projects. Others get bored and leave or if like myself have a family and other commitments to attend to. However there is alot new members who attempt a mod or two every now and then.

Actually, I'm eagerly anticipating the 3rd person mod. I suspect a lot of modders are rubbing their hands in glee at the thought of playing with that for a while. In the meantime, I'd love to wrap my head around how to do a decent map mod.

Any particular reason you are quoting me?

Other than you are the one I was addressing. Key item to address:

Shamelessly? You mean people shamelessly plugging their mod into the topic?
*Edit* Impending thread derailment.

All I was saying is those were the latest of the mods. That is all.

Still, it depends on the subject matter... I would be excited for a Lord of the Rings Weapon mod, with different aspects. Like combining enchanting, different weapons and teleporting all into a mythological sort of modpack, then I would most definitely download it. (I might make that.)

Has anyone done a mod of using lava to fuel a furnace? By either putting the furnace over the lava or using a bucket of lava put in it? I prefer the furnace over the lava so it is endless fuel or it could be good for say 90-120 days. Then it has to be replenished.

Not possible as a mod. It is being added as a core patch.
I am currently working on (mod wise):
- Capture the flag (game)
- PrivAreas (rewrite)
- Yet Another Mobs Mod (YAMM)
- Sound Plus (Sound absorbing, refracting, reflecting)

Buckets of lava can be used as fuel by default.

It is because of the restrictions in Minetest features.

Kind of, new mods are only good if they introduce a really great new concept(take stu's mods for example), or a good idea.

I think a good engine change would be the ability to create our own crafting systems.

No hack work. Also, a 4x4 and a 5x5 crafting table would be a nice addition to minetest_game.

Instead of complaining about there being no mods, try; creating your own mod like almost everyone is here, post these complaints in the Bugs and Problems section of the forums. I came to the Modding General category of the forums to find some mods in development etc. etc. Not trying to be mean just saying, do something yourself don't expect others to do it for you.

There is a 4x4 and 5x5 crafting table mod, but I have other things in mind.

The crafting grid is in lua: doesn't require an engine change.

No.
A crafting system can be done in Lua, though, so you dont need any engine features for that.

Well, won't that be a source of lag for the game?
