textures are easy. just get an image editor like gimp, create an image that is 16x16 pixels, and viola! you have the base for your image. you can now edit the image one pixel at a time till you have the desired image.

that is why you manipulate one pixel at a time. also, here is the tip that can solve your problem: don't use hard color changes, unless you are specifically going for it. go from bright orange to dark red-orange to scarlet. create a transition area.

Also, add some variation to the colors that are the same. change your brightness a little bit. make it a touch lighter in some spots, and a touch darker in others. you use this, and people will rave about your textures.

Don't say that too loud. I'm always looking for people who can do good textures. Good textures are essential for most mods. I usually stick to tools or nodes which re-use textures from default (sometimes used in a diffrent context or combined) or use textures others where kind enough to provide or even make (those are the more complex textures you see in my mods).

Currently, I'm looking for a better wood texture. Something similar, but not copied from RealTest, so that the RealTest trees can be made available:

The 4 planks textures do not really match those 3-planks one from default. Perhaps the 3-planks-one ought to be replaced as it does not look that well in other colors.

Dan, why don't you upload the code to github? Interested artisits can add textures to your mod then.

well, I just made this in about a minute. I think with a little color tweaking, we could have a new base texture for wood. Image

Thanks, but I'm afraid that won't do yet. It might be a good texture for the actual trees (which can be obtained from hdx), but not so much for planks as it is too diffrent from the current one. A nicer 4-planks-texture might be best.

Why not use some existing textures? They're all (well, almost) CC0!
If you want you may use my Heretic's TP. Or take a look at textures inside Dwarves game - they're amazing. Also you can try the ones from Freeminer default game.
