Why are the two redundant community wikis?

by Wuzzy » Fri Sep 20, 2013 17:45

I am a bit confused. I just noticed that there are two community wikis about Minetest which look very similar to each other; and a lot of their contents are either redundant and/or inconsistent.

I do note that on the official website, only wiki.minetest.net is linked to but not wiki.minetest.com. None of the wikis mentions the existance of the other wiki (but the dev wiki is mentioned on both AFAIK). I was surprised when I discovered this.

In the last few days I contributed a lot to wiki.minetest.com, only to see later that some pages I created are already on wiki.minetest.net. But luckily, not everything. The most notable changes/additions are:

I am used to http://wiki.minetest.com/ instead of http://wiki.minetest.net/ because I know Minetest back from the olden 0.2 ages and my bookmarks don’t change automatically. ;-) (I just was not very active in the community).

I hope my changes don’t go down the drain now because I contributed to the “wrong” wiki. :-/ But on the other hand, since both are based on MediaWiki, merging shouldn’t be too hard.

I’d almost say that one of the two wikis must die, so much redundancy is driving me nuts! But I don’t say it because there may be a legitimate reason for this. Which brings me to the big question:

Why are the two redundant community wikis?
I'm creating MineClone 2, a Minecraft clone for Minetest.
I made the Help modpack, adding in-game help to Minetest.

wiki.minetest.net is the "official" one.

Btw, nice that you contribute to the wiki!

I must have missed that post.
Now what will happen to the “unofficial” wiki then?

Dunno, I heard that the admin of it disappeared.

Uh-oh. Then probably the wiki will disappear with him/her without warning. :-/
But I am prepared.
I really am not in the mood of manually copying every single page to the new wiki.
So I made a MediaWiki export (using a special page) of all the pages I touched in the last days. Full history is included. It can be downloaded from here. I wonder if it is possible to make a full export without involving the admin. But I hope this is not really neccessary, since the older stuff is really outdated anyways. Not included in the export are the images I uploaded, I guess I would have to manually re-upload them.
wiki.minetest.com export (part of article namespace)
wiki.minetest.com export (part of file namespace [only file descriptions])

I read that the admin(s) of wiki.minetest.net can use this XML file to import it into the official wiki. But beware: There are some pages included which also appear on wiki.minetest.net, which may cause conflicts. I fear those cases have to be manually worked through. >_>

Most of your changes had already been made at the new wiki. So i have only moved the additional stuff and all that was compatible.

PS: Don't make single articles for jungle items. Jungle sapling belong to saplings. You wouldnt do single articles for each wool color either ;)

Thanks for importing some of the pages.
I see you did not import most of my changes. I made changes to the node pages, mostly I updated the crafting. If I think about it, the crafting on those pages is still not really correct (see below). So I don’t mind that you don’t import those changes.

But the following pages contain changes which actually add something new (I checked it manually), so you really should import them, too (if possible):
  • Controls (missing)
  • Controls/Movement modes (missing)
  • Minetest.conf (missing)
  • Mese Block (includes new crafting recipes, btw: Mese has been renamed to “Mese Block” in the official game)
  • Leaves (outdated, Leaves decay now even if close to jungle trees, but they need normal trees)
  • Sapling (outdated, Saplings don’t fall from Jungle trees anymore)
  • Jungle Leaves (reason follows)
  • Jungle Sapling (reason follows)
  • Sandstone (crafting)
  • All the file descriptions (Whatever, I can do this manually if importing these is not possible)
Please include above pages in your import. You don’t have to, but it makes life for me easier. In the next days I am probably going to create an account on wiki.minetest.net. :-)

About the jungle stuff: I added it because they look different and also there are just four jungle items (jungle tree, junglewood planks, jungle leaves, jungle sapling). That’s not much and clearly not comparable to wool color. If there were like 12 jungle items I probably woudln’t have done that.

I also noticed that a lot in the crafting stuff has changed. The biggest change which is not reflected in any wiki is that you can use groups in crafts. I totally forgot that. The interesting part is that you can craft a chest out of 8 wood or 8 junglewood. I reflected this change in the “chest” page. However, even this is only half the truth. In reality, you can craft a chest out of 8 items of the “wood” group. It is interesting because this means I could mix the wood and craft my chest out of 4 wood planks and 4 junglewood planks. So I guess almost every crafting page needs to be updated again. :D
The problem is, how should we represent groups in the crafting tables? If we use standard wood for “wood” (for example), the reader may be misled to the idea that the craft only works with normal wood. I have no idea how to do this.

Obviously groups are an important concept in Minetest and they need extra pages. Or maybe just categories. Or both, I am not sure … Probably this is one of the next things I’ll be working on.
