No use the executable known as oalinst.exe run that (you may need to reboot) then try Minetest. I am sure as hell that this works.

i dont know which fixed it (i did download the one you said but incase i redownloaded it) but i think i finished the installation this time by trying to run the program and i rebooted my system...now i have sound

one last this...how do you change the volume of sounds? the sand/dirt/etc sounds are too loud to play but if i lower my volume to where it isnt annoying then i cant hear stone/etc
I like to debate.

volume can be chAnged by the default/init.Lua

That only applies to singleplayer...
I'd suggest lowering your volume in general. It's still better than no sound, no? :P

Sorry to bump the old topic but just upgraded to win7 64bit and having trouble getting sound to work for Minetest. I fixed the problem with missing MSVCR100.dll file to run it but have no sound as the openal32.dll is not working. I downloaded the openal32.dll file and place it in windows/system32 then reboot but still no sound. Maybe something i have done wrong?

EDIT: Nevermind, i found an old openal installer on my storage drive, that fixed it.
