What version of Minetest are you using?

One popular problem is that maybe you put minetest directory in the Program Files directory. Try creating a directory, maybe named Games and put it in there on the C: drive or D: drive. So it would look something like this: C:\Game\minetest and since Games isn't a protected directory it should run if there are no other problems. The minetest.conf file is created the first time minetest is successfully run. and is in the root minetest directory i.e. C:\Games\minetest\.

Since you are using windows 7 64 bit, fess's 64 bit version of the developer's version of minetest might work best for you. You can find it here:

Have you looked in the FAQ?

https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?id=3829

If it stops working before the main window even opens, and there are no error messages in debug.txt, then try restarting your computer.
(sometimes it crashes with a 0x00005 error, which is caused by windows updates.)
You can try
  • looking in debug.txt for an error message
  • searching for a similar article in the forums
  • reporting it if none found

Minetest.conf should be in the folder bin/ is in. It is created automatically when you run the game.
If it is not created then either:

  • Minetest crashed before it could write the conf
  • Minetest has no read/write access
  • You are looking in the wrong folder, and you used a non-run in place build (not possible on windows)

Hmm, are you using a 'Limited account'? On XP, my copy crashes without warning on Limited accounts. Switch to an administrator account and try again..
7:42 PM - Bauglio: I think if you go to staples you could steal firmware from a fax machine that would run better than win10 does on any platform
7:42 PM - Bauglio: so fudge the stable build
7:43 PM - Bauglio: get the staple build
