Working on BIG projects in Minetest

by Michael Eh? » Sat Feb 18, 2012 05:43

Okay I've left Kray (tsundere) for Gameboom and staked out a parcel of land away from the center. Big projects are always well BIG work. Some of my thoughts of tackling big projects on servers...

Planning is big part. Laying out things. I've taken to working out details in local server in creative mode to get an idea of how much space a particular structure might take.

This is a tower I used rock, glass and torches. Getting an idea by trying different things as I built up. Largely a layout of how much ground it would cover. Not only how it looks outside but inside from various angles.

I tried several styles and viewed at various times. Making changes as I went. Once I figured out how to build, it made the actual build quicker but few changes to use natural formations. Only pests like DMs mess it up.

What is your tips or experience on BIG builds?

I may actually come and help with this. I haven't found anything else to do on Gameboom

Actually I'm still in the layout stages. Taking a massive block of stone which seems to float over the water. Making changes as I go. So it's hard to say how the finished project will turn out. Been going around killing off any DM close to the project. The base for the tower is massive annd laying that out before starting the tower.

Still this is a thread on coming up and managing a big project. I was looking through Lego building for ideas and plans. I remember seeing some one doing a cathedral which was impressive.

I found that some things didn't translate well from local server to actual use. The stone section didn't yield the space for tower I was hoping and had to adjust accordingly.

Working on the top dome spire for the tower and finding I have to make a solid block on the local server then carve it to desired shape then take notes to transfer to gameboom.net. Might work on a graphic table of how to handle curves in blocks.

Also my deisgn has no stairs and they didn't work well on Gameboom. Still it looks great in the dark.

Got a couple of neighbours though I'm not liking the encrouchment. Wanted to build far enough away so I have a fair base to resources to build from.

Built a bit of underground gardens with trees underground with grass. You have to put the torch right on the mud to get the grass to grow.

An overview of town planning where I've level off the land, planted trees, sealed off surface entrances.

Still debating on what to build. A bank? Town hall? Theatre?

While it looks like a BIG space, it's awkward layout and still more leveling land. Once you start adding buildings, the space is filled up. The trees are spaced 6 blocks apart for scale. The mineshaft entrances are 5x5.

I worked out a spire for the tower I'm building on Gameboom. I work out the details in creative mode in local server. I tried to just create a block on top then sculpture down. Didn't work. Tried another method and this is the result.

I took pictures of the process. Took a little under 2 hours. I might do a tutorial on this and domes later on.

What you think?

Build a theatre and I got squatters now... er I mean neighbours. Couple of people have decided to move in. Not liking it. One has made off with a locked chest and tried to build an existing building I was working on before I had to fast forward the town.

Some people don't have any concept of 'property lines'.

The theatre I did a rough sketch on back of an appointment card. Has marque, balcony, stage, ticket office. Pictures later.

Borderstones are new... teleport isn't. though talks of restrictions. I made my suggestion to merge 'sethome' to teleport amoung other features like naming a destinations.

I tend to work in broad area. Not in a sense of that the project takes up the whole space but the space is needed for resources for a big project. Originally I was levelling land for orchard to grow wood for a sail ship. I since dropped it because it's been done before.

I think the concept that you HAVE to use up every last spot or build inspite of others and take as much room as possible. For me landscape is as valueable or more valueable as buildings .

The tower project on Gameboom.net was the best use of landform of solid stone block that stood on the water.

I think the server admin have to deal out land as you would have in RL. Set plots of land in 250x250 or 500x500. Come on Minetest is 65,000+ square blocks to build. It's comes down to hurding kittens.. or the masses.

Excuse me I ment teleporters/ portals. They are new and he is doing them. Border stones are the best thing ever.

I have filed a complaint against one player for stealing the locked chest and taking a building. The admins on Gameboom are not tolerant of griefers since their masterpiece of center (0,0,0) gets vandalized often. I occasionally go center to fix some of the damage but I have enough keeping a swam of noobies from trashing my place though it's out of the way, 3000,2,3000

the great thing is you can define a pretty large area(not sure on the specifics) then connect it with another borderstone area. all by defining a clan an one in the clan can remove/place stones etc. i lke laying a jachoo's server just for this:3
