I don't think so. If you use free move and noclip, you can go inside a node - you'll see that the nodes become transparent when viewed from inside.

You can't just "request" new versions of minetest. 0.5.0 is a long way off, and shouldn't be rushed. The first mod you suggested is possible, that might actually be something I'll give a shot at.
