You: Open MT -> Server tab -> Start world -> Portforward your computer (*) -> Tell friend your IP and port
Your friend: Open MT -> Multiplayer tab -> Enter IP and port -> Join world -> Enjoy

I had a problem with multiplayer too in 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04 and the version of minetest 0.4.9 in the Ubuntu Software Center, on 3 different computers. It would not load multiplayer and would not list public servers. It would also crash. I had to delete that version and download a dev version a day ago which seems to work fine. Sorry I can't be more help in debugging this since I deleted the buggy version of minetest.
