Main menu freezes

Hey guys, I've got an elemental error:
If I start minetest, the main menu opens but I can't interact! I cannot even close the window without using taskmanager.
I am using 0.4.9 on Ubuntu Studio 14.04. debug.txt is completly blank. I removed minetest from my computer and reinstalled it several times but it still doesn't work. There are no mods in the minetest folders; it's completely vanilla.
Could somebody help me, please?

Please try to get the latest dev build NOT over the software downloader (or however it's called).

Follow the guide in "General Discussion", it's sticked.

Thank you Krock it works with the menu, but now minetest crashes if I try to enter any world. I imported my old stuff, maybe I did something wrong because I needed to create the "mods" folder in the minetest folder and the "worlds" folder in .minetest. could somebody tell me how to fix this?

Can you paste the 20 last lines of `debug.txt' (located on your `.minetest' directory)?

It's not a world specific problem. It's similar with all other worlds.

1) got the newest version all the time
2) creating a vanilla world isn't possible (don't know why)
5) what's a leveldb world?

There is no error message if I try to create a world, it just don't happen anything.
And sorry for don't understanding, but what is backend?

I think it could be something with folder acces, because I'm also unable to disable or enable mods.
But I have no idea how to fix this. Please help!
