You'll wanna start with wide roads and huge/tall buildings for your downtown. From there, build progressively smaller scale buildings in a circular pattern.

Have enough time! My first town is very little (ca. 500mx350m) and I needed over 14 months to build it. (Its nearly finished now. I think ca 1-2 month work is left.)

At first, you should think about the style of the city. Historic, modern, fantasy or a rebuild of a real city?
Look at the maps New York City from JP and my own city Karsthafen. You can find both in the maps-section in this forum. You can get ideas from the maps, even you build in a very other style.

And you must have fun in the building, enough patience. Start with one house, build a street to the house and begin the next house. There are more things you can build in a city than you can imagine. The ideas will come after months of building of homes. Only the style of the city should be the same.

And back to the begin of this posting: My idea for you is: Rebuild the town where you live.
