Are You Ready For MScraft Exiles?:)-

by tomwsmf » Tue Sep 16, 2014 02:44

Speaking as some one who is looking very seriously at Minetest as a new home for our family's diggey diggey hole addiction I have to wonder how many folks will be landing, have already landed , here.

I have. Howdy. I also stumbled onto the reddit as well.

My oldest and I just did our first test run both on a local world and on the servers. We were very impressed. Is it 100% like Minecraft? Nope, then again we are not looking for that. There are a bunch of ways Minetest is ahead of Minecraft (the lighting, the lua api, the built in mod downloader, the way joining a server gets you all you need to play on that server). We have been playing Minecraft since before the Halloween update of '10 so we have a good sense of where things are and where they appear to be heading. Gota say, great work.

It will be very interesting to see how things shake down. I for one am much happier now that I know Minetest is here. Much thanks to all that have made it what it is.

Lets hope the fans that ran Notch out of his own games company stay with MScraft, who needs that noise.

I played a little MC, and more MT, about a year ago. Been busy until recently, and didn't have time to play. Now I do, and was trying to decide where to focus my time. I'm not wigged out about the buyout; I was leaning towards MT anway. :)

It's been a year since I played, and I'm really impressed. MT has come a long way in just a year. The devs and modders really are something else here.

I'll confess when I heard the rumor that Microsoft was in negotiations to buy Mojang, that very night I was seeking out an alternative, and saw mention of Minetest on the FTB forums as well.

I watched some videos on Youtube too, and from this forum learned that the bottom layer of the world is 30,000 blocks down (that's a lot of digging that can be done!) I also browsed through these forums and looked over some of the mods that have already been released for Minetest. I was very impressed and I might have a fallback depending on how the dust settles. But having played MC since the beta days (back in 2010 - 2011) the news was disappointing.

I will have to say I love the game so far, and the mods look awesome, so I just want to thank the mod authors for that. There are a few I haven't checked out yet, but I probably will in time.

So yeah, my addiction to breaking blocks and rearranging them and mining might continue uninterrupted. :)

If you want to really feel the full extent of the 64k cube of Minetest, try the subgame SkyTest
<Here> are some screenshots of a SkyTest world.

Hello!

Really nice to hear that our core devs and modders didn't disappoint =D

Stick around, we'd love to hear more noises around here, it's too quiet =)

Welcome back, hoodedice. You were not here for a while.

The more stories we get in these forums, the better. We certainly need more life around here.

The wiki could do with a Minecraft to minetest transition page. Expains the differences that catch minecrafters out. Items not dropping on dog, workbenches, crafting.

My kids and I are very much thinking of doing up a semi regular Minetest youtube series. I would place bets the first couple of entries will be about moving from Minecraft to Minetest. if I get some time i might lay the ground work for it today.

It's a fair point, and I completely understand. There's a lot of toxicity towards MS right now over this. Pretty much every forum I've found discussing the recent buyout has turned into a flamewar between the folks who think this is the end of MC and the folks who think it's going to be sunshine and roses. But to be honest, it's no different than any other emotionally charged issue that's discussed on the Web. Here in the US, it's pretty much impossible to have a civil, political discussion without degenerating into using words like 'repubtard' or libtard' and other such stupidity. It's just good, old-fashioned human nature.

For the record, I don't hate MS. Hate takes a lot of energy, and I'd rather not waste mine. But I'm aware of MS' nature and prior patterns of behavior. I'm very aware of their strategies regarding competition and open-source. I have enough of a brain left to anticipate their actions. And that, my friend, is why I have said my goodbyes to MC once and for all.

Personally, I think the haters have a right to hate. MC was special, now it belongs to MS. It means a great deal to a lot of people. Now, some people think the buyout is fine, or don't care. Others may think like me, and see dark clouds on the horizon. Either way, the players and the community had no power to stop this. Good or ill, this was out of their control. The only thing they can do is scream their displeasure. I wouldn't wish to take away that right, even if I don't like the vulgarity of it all.

But maybe it'd be better if they screamed their hatred on another forum :P

Anyway, there are at least three of us that have posted about coming here as a result of the buyout. There are probably more that are lurking. We'll see.

Bashing of MS? Having had to deal with MS both personally and in business settings I can tell you that the line between bashing and not wanting to repeat the same problems over and over again at the hands of the same company, MS in this case, was crossed decades ago.

MS has clear and well documented track record for fud and wrecking communities. Heck you can go back to Bill Gates and the early days of Altair basic (1976) and see where the bad behaviors first had a public showing. Since then, one event after another. Lawsuits, predatory practices, bad mouthing other communities, spreading the fud around on anything it deemed a threat.

So when a company with a track record like that takes over something like Minecraft it would be negligent to ignore the potential impact it will have on that community. Many Minecrafters who also have seen MS in action are decidedly weighing out the impacts

Which is why Minetest is seeing a tick up in interest. However folks got here though, here we are and lets work on the best of things and leave the crud and cruft of entities like MS behind.

Ah but you see. I also do not entirely agree with the Microsoft Buyout unless my Minecraft stays the way it is and it neither sows down in development or makes me buy extra stuff. Also the "MScraft" was what I was calling bashing Microsoft. Frankly it is too early to know what will happen and calling Minecraft MScraft, seems like any other MC hate to me. I mean I found out this morning that it was bought. That is soo not enough time to tell. Also another thing I just noticed. Only people who are banned, aka forced to leave, would become an exile. I think you mean players.

Self exile:)- For those of us who have lived under MS, either on OS or in applications...no one forced us to leave. We left on our own accord to Unix or Libre Office or dev environments that were not so festooned with cruft or database servers that were not tied to the whims of the MS marketing dept.

I think you might be mistaking "haterzgotahate" for years , decades in my case, of having had to deal with what MS does in the course of its being. Been there, done that....and not going anywhere near it unless I am being paid a few metric tons of cold hard currency in compensation.

Giving them time? They have been given decades to prove what they bring to the table. Even if you were able to wipe away all the decades of MS biz practices you would still have the example of what MS did with Minecraft on the Xbox (limited version, pay for skins, restricted user content, etc etc) to draw conclusions from.

It would be fantatic, amazing and news worthy if they did indeed leave the minecraft community as is and not do what they usually do to acquisitions. I hope to see this happen, I expect it not to be so.

As with my choice of OS, apps, and games...MS gets a learned and well documented No Thank You from me.

YMMV and I respect that. Years of proven history though, that is rock solid.

And now, done with the MS end of things... I am way to into testing out the Android Minetest client. Bob love a duck it is so cool, warts and all.

I am not an MSCraft "exile" yet, but some of you may know me from mathematics PhoenixTeam (https://github.com/PhoenixTeamMC) and I really wanna see if I can help this project :)

Yeah, I was busy with other stuff. I mostly work behind the scenes, managing Minetest outreach among people on twitter and in real life.

And I came back because we had this big influx of MC players, and I do suppose extra hands of experienced miners like mine do count =)

Sounds cool. Since Minetest is more of an engine, the more modders, the better the game becomes. That is why we have subgames.
