Honestly, I think you will be disappointed if you try to make Minetest be a subsitute Minecraft. Minetest comes with its own set of strengths and weaknesses. The biggest strength of Minetest over Minecraft is that it is easy to write and install mods. Thus you can and should experiment with all kinds of Mods with Minetest. Installing a Mod for MC is a much bigger hassle, and then it breaks as soon as a new version is released. Mods are a snap to install with Minetest, and they don't break because they use the modding API.
Also I enjoy using the servers in Minetest better than MC servers. It is easier to log on to servers, some allow you to interact immediately. Also many of the servers are less built up. They just seem less formal, so you can log on and just have some fun.
