I am getting error fail to load...should I remove random buildings to use this?
what am I doing wrong here?

I've re-added the pictures in this thread as well, although the newer version of this mod (called mg_villages) is a bit diffrent and in most parts more advanced. I'll try out the intresting things paramat has created and will eliminate the over-enthusiastic jungle trees in the next version.

As to that strange bug regarding reading some of the files, I have no idea what may cause it. Windows builds seem to have trouble with it, while Linux builds seem to be able to read the file just fine.

Some recent optimizations ought to speed up village terrain generation. The highest effect might be seen when generating very large villages with plenty of houses. A recent version of Minetest is recommended (at max a few days old).

The name generator doesn't really need much from minetest as such. If you edit the file a bit and call the namegen in a loop, you can run it directly with a lua interpreter. The pr:next(..) calls can be replaced by math.random(...) for standalone experiments.

Thank you :-) I hope the villages will be pleasant. If you're out of luck, however, an intresting name may stand for a coalburner's hut/tent plus clay/wood heap only.

Some villages have suffixes which may be found in real English village names.

AldoBr has written a namegen based on markov chains. That one needs training, and I havn't experimented much with it yet. It's also a very intresting approach.

Those names are my favourites from a list of a thousand, most are nonsense words, but even as it is now it's fun and occasionally very funny. I tried adding a few elements: ki and vi for Finland, stadt and berg for Germany, 'sville for USA, oerkki as prefix, dungeon as suffix, mese and nyan as syllables because they are Minetest legends. There are lots of English elements i feel like creating a more North European feel. Added a few typical local village names from here in East England.

after many transfers on London airports, my first visit to anything outside of airports in England was a bicycle tour through Essex and Norfolk. Finally wrecking my bike useless in Cambridge. That must have been between 1982 and 1984. I visited Norwich again about ten years later and was amazed how much it had changed. I visited Yorkshire a few years ago and I think I the rural names there are really nice. It must be the mix of Saxon and Skandinavian elements as basis that might make names in that region so interesting for me.

Sokomine, this is what i have so far, written as a mod for use in mgv6 https://github.com/paramat/randomblend
It chooses random schematic dimensions (6-16 nodes for x and z), chooses a random location per mapchunk, calculates the average terrain height, flattens and blends, and places a stone foundation to represent the schematic's size. No irregularity yet, i'll also try leaving some unprocessed columns as with the village blending, also i will replace any tree trunks with saplings.

You're right - the mod really needs its own topic soon. There was some bigger progress recently: Paramat has written some nice terrain blending code for individual houses. They can now be spawned and look quite natural. This is far better than the version I came up with :-) Paramat is a genius with mapgens.

Listing all the features and doing some screenshots will be quite a lot of work I'm afraid.

That depends on what you consider to be a city. I call them villages because the..settlement...is not very structured. For each village type and each schematic, it's possible to declare how often this house ought to appear in relative and absolute terms. Real cities are a bit more structured than that. Plus you'd probably want other schematics for the houses of a town/city. The village type "canadian" consists of houses that might be found in a canadian town. Those where built by LadyMacBest and require a modpack from Mauvebic.

I've used minetest_next during the development of the villages mod. Seems minetest_game is diffrent regarding the growing of trees. Unfortunately, the grow functions you mentioned cannot be used as well as the old one. There's a reason for why I passed those parameters on. The new function reads the map data, changes it (more or less as before) and writes it back. The only part that's needed for the villages is doing the actual changes to the data structure - a datastructure which has been read already. Perhaps the functions can be extended so that extra parameters are understood again. Else I'll probably have to copy that code over.

Thanks! Those buildings look only so well-blended due to your code :-) The sand on top of it is deliberate. I'm not using any height limitations for it and just raise or lower whatever terrain will be at a place.

Sokomine, any suggestions on where to get MM2? I've had no luck locating it. My kids love mg_villages btw, daughter spent an hour just pilfering chests. Can't wait for actual villagers.

glomie/globis accidentally removed the original server, as far as l know there are just some video(s) remaining. The new servers he begun didn't last long.
