Ethereal biome problems. Is this intended?

by djozone » Fri Apr 17, 2015 22:10

I seem to have certain problems with the "Ethereal" mod.

Number one problem is that certain biomes seem to either be nonexistant or so rare that their virtually nonexistant or so the ones I do see are so common that certain biomes seem to be the only ones in the game(and some of the super common ones are almost way too big than I think they were intended imo).

For example I have not seen a frosty biome(the cold blue colored grass biomes) yet even after searching for one on many (and I mean MANY) maps(yes I saw one before but that was on minetest version 0.4.10 using the 0.4.11 ethereal version(yes, the wrong ethereal version for the wrong minetest version) but not on minetest version 0.4.12 using ethereal version 1.15) and hardly ever see the prarie(ones with the flower grass) biomes(not sure I've seen one on a mapgen v7 map which is what I play the ethereal mod on). Actually the only biomes I actually seem to get are desert(ones with desert sand), dried dirt biomes(the one with scorched trees), firey biomes(with lava annoyingly flowing down "cliffs" into water) "beach biomes"(the stretch of sand at the oceans edge) mushroom biomes,Bamboo biomes(which are usually too huge and too common imo) and finally jungle biomes along with the ""default grass" and trees biomes". I don't see any of the other surface biomes. Are some biomes supposed to be this rare(even rare enough to be virtually nonexistant?) or appear too be too big or is my game generating the mod incorrectly(using mapgen v7)? Because I'm assuming there is something wrong with the generation of the biomes.

seriously, what's going on with this mod? I like this mod too much to just stop using it due to minetest being kinda lacking in content(especially biomes and blocks) when playing vanilla.

Biome generation is different per seed, some have many green areas while others have larger colder areas... I generally use the seed 'test' then heading to the west leads to cold biomes and jungle areas to explore...

Could you explain what a or your seed 'test' is?

'test' is not a valid seed.
If you enter 'test' some random seed is generated. the seed of a world is stored in map_meta.txt in worlds dir.
A seed looks like that: 8526476017783676140

The seed doesnt have to be a number, any letters entered will be converted into a seed also and 'test' is the seed I use for checking biome generation which brings up the same map that I use to test Ethereal with...

Also I've seen aerial "screenshots" of maps such as http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/3824/mapabu.png from the snow biomes mod forums page found here: https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?id=2290

What is used to achieve that, a mod or is it a program(perhapse something similar to MineTest or the Minimap mod for MineCraft?)? I hope that it's not program that's only for Windows because I am using Xubuntu Linux.

You can either use minetestmapper.py, which should be located in the util/ folder of your minetest installation (at least, if it is compiled as a run in place) or you can compile https://github.com/minetest/minetestmapper, which does the same, but should be a lot faster.
