I've fixed most of the problems caused by changes in newer versions of minetest_game and added two additional levels - one which focusses on stonebrick and its variations plus the new ores, and one that concentrates on farming. A full minetest_game minus bones and fire ought to do. If doors, beds, wool and farming are not installed, the new levels will not be available. I've also added a very basic craft guide which shows how to craft what is needed in each step. There's also a tiny reward for finishing the last level.

It would be helpful if someone could test it. The fork can be found on github.

Thank you! Once the test is complete, the fork ought to be integrated back into the original version of the mod. The fork exists just for testing. So far, sadly, nobody else has done any testing (or at least reported back).

I have played it a little bit but haven't gotten too far yet. I've been a little busy lately and it looks like I will be that way for the next few weeks. One thing I hated about the original was having to create the coal and iron blocks and then having to mine them. It got tedious fast.

EDIT: One thing I would change is like my extras mod I created for myself which changes dirt so that it has a chance to give you some clay when it is dug. I also changed stone so that when it was dug it had a chance to give you ore. The rarer the ore, the smaller the chance you got some. I think this would work well in a skyblock universe.

*NOTE* I do not use my extras mod in regular minetest but made it just to see if I could and for use in very resource poor worlds.

LOVE IT!

I finally made it past level one. SIGH.

The noticeable differences on level one were that you could:
*punch trees with fist and not need axe.
*all the trees were same height regardless of type, I think they were different in the original.
*the platform was at y0 so it was right on the water.
*the water and lava behaved oddly, as I was not able to grief up a lava mountain proper.
*the dirt randomly fell like sand in some spots

When I completed the level I wanted to muck about on the previous level and make a ladder up to the 2nd level, which had me dig through the base of level 2.

This was foolish on my part as the lava poured out and got me good. I enabled fly right after this to take the picture of grief. HAHA!

More testing to do and I will make video showing progress.

Thank you guys for all the work you had put into this, I believe it should be a part of minetest as a subgame.

Hm, certainly, but it's also a major change to the gameplay. I think you ought to keep that as a local modification for now. It's pretty easy to do after all - just change the definition of stone and let it drop ores randomly, same as sandstone and desertstone right now.

There are also some mods around which let trees and plants like papyrus spawn ore randomly. Sounds like you might enjoy them :-)

maikerumine wrote:The noticeable differences on level one were that you could:

Thanks for reporting that bug. The new pinetrees and the older jungletrees where not changed so that those could still be digged by hand. That's corrected now.

maikerumine wrote:*all the trees were same height regardless of type, I think they were different in the original.

No, I don't think so. I just added pine trees to it (which admittedly look like normal trees). They're intended as a source of diffrent wood. The original skyblock game gave the same default:wood for both normal tree and jungletree.

maikerumine wrote:*the platform was at y0 so it was right on the water.

Like the original skyblock game, there are options for water, lava or air "seas" around the base block. I personally like the island-style water most.

maikerumine wrote:*the water and lava behaved oddly, as I was not able to grief up a lava mountain proper.

Lava in this game is renewable, same as water. Originally, a few lava sources where placed around the spawn platform at "sea" level in order to create the lava sea (if that option was selected), and they started to form the sea from a few source nodes. Lava cooling also works diffrently. If you combine the lava below your spawn point and the "reward" lava inside the bubble that forms level 2, you can create an infinite lava source.

maikerumine wrote:*the dirt randomly fell like sand in some spots

That is very odd. I don't see how dirt could do that.

maikerumine wrote:When I completed the level I wanted to muck about on the previous level and make a ladder up to the 2nd level, which had me dig through the base of level 2.

Uh oh! The other levels are pretty save there (as long as you don't dig the level block itshelf), but the second bubble contains your second lava source...

maikerumine wrote:This was foolish on my part as the lava poured out and got me good. I enabled fly right after this to take the picture of grief. HAHA!

At least it happend pretty early in the game. Level 2 is a lot more work :-)

maikerumine wrote:More testing to do and I will make video showing progress.

That would be nice.

I wasn't able to create infinite lava, do I put the lava above the other lava source or side by side?

OOPS! I was playing in my modded minetest_game where I changed all the dirt nodes to fall.

I am going to re download your fork and re test over the weekend.

Just checked the code and found out that it's limited to games that start with a lava sea. Guess I mixed that up with reading somewhere that renewable lava was suggested by someone. The second lava source seem to be nothing but a reserve in case your first one gets lost.

I just made it to level 4! Looks like a challenge so I will take a break and just upload the video that I have so far for the previous levels, after editing of course.

I really like the gameplay thus far. I am happy I can finally experience the other levels!

NOTE: Level 4 shows ! instead of the number 4 block.

Thanks for the report. Luckily, there was a texture for level 4. I've now replaced it accordingly. Level 6 - the final one - now got the exclamation mark.

I hope you'll progress further soon. Level 1-3 are as they used to be. Level 4 will require a lot of digging in order to get the materials for the diffrent brick and metal blocks. Level 5 only has some "light" farming - which will nonetheless require time for all that growing.

The game seems to come with its own texture pack, which can be found here.

Any progress so far on level 4? I hope I didn't make it too difficult.

I have completed all the levels. It actually isn't very difficult, just don't lose your lava to the water.

Did you complete the new levels as well? Or only those in the old version? Which level did you reach?

Aaaah! Thank you! An independent test if all worked correctly was all that was needed :-) Cornernote even created a nice web page for skyblock. Guess all that's left is that I send out some pull requests.

I had problems but I got it to trigger by creating a large area of water, say 5x5. After it has all turned into water sources, I stood in the center and scooped some water. I waited for the water source to come back and dumped the water in the bucket in the same spot. I just kept doing this in a number of spots around me until it finally triggered.

i am making a whole new set of levels, it's going to be more friendly to multi-player and android users, and due to this I have decided to remove lava, and make the water tasks easier.

Heres how it looks so far:

Is there any kind of automatic protection of own island on the multiplayer server? For example digging, placing nodes, interact with chests etc... ?

Getting iron is not so difficult - at least it wasn't in the versions of the game I know. Cornernote said something about making it more tricky. In such a case, making the default chest a locked one might help. As far as protection goes, that's even more difficult. I considered adding protection based on who got which island to start with - but that's tricky as players love to connect their islands with each other. Maybe a share command could help plus a protection that goes 1/3 the distance to the next island - or something like that.

Im comparing this mod with bukkit plugin uSkyBlock - http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/uskyblock/

Bukkit plugin have automatic protection of island for owner and also party members. I think some kind of protection against griefers is needed on the open multiplayer server.

I was using protector as is, but protecting the whole island is a nice idea. I'll look into using some of the code from protector mod to do this.
