Update

A few more tweaks have been added to existing mods.

  • Colored wool now has a reverse craft. Place a colored wool into the craft grid; a white wool block will appear in the output. When the white wool block is removed from the output, the colored wool block (in the craft grid) changes to its respective dye. (Suggestion by klappspaten)
  • Stonebrick types reverse craft into their respective stone type, i.e.: 1 stonebrick will reverse craft into one stone block, 1 sandstonebrick will reverse craft into 1 sandstone block. This works for stonebrick, sandstonebrick, obsidianbrick, desert_stonebrick, coal_stone_bricks, and iron_stone_bricks. (Suggestion by Worldblender)
  • Our custom recipe's output for clay blocks has been boosted from 4 to 8. (Suggestion by klappspaten)
  • Brass blocks have been added. 9 brass ingots craft into 1 brass block; 1 brass block crafts into 9 brass ingots. Brass blocks are compatible with the circular saw. (Suggestion by noob101)
  • Mithril blocks are compatible with the circular saw. (Suggestion by deezl)
  • Climbing poison ivy is craftable and climbable. 3 grass, in a vertical column in the crafting grid = 3 climbing poison ivies.
  • Waterlilies are craftable. 1 white dandelion flower over 1 grass = 2 waterlilies.
  • Flowers, straw, wheat and cotton seeds, paper, sticks, string, ivies, seaweeds, and waterlilies can now be used as short-burn fuels. (Suggestion by Worldblender)

Mate, I'm impressed! Nice modifications and additions! I like the poison ivy most, but you obviously forgot to include the itching effect xD

Thanks a ton, noob101

Update

Colored clay has been added to OtherBlocks

  • Our custom recipe for clay blocks has been boosted to output 36 clay blocks. Regular clay is used in making bricks, colored clay, colored marbles and granites. The larger output is intended to give players some more, abundant, nice looking materials to build with.
  • Unlike default clay, when colored clays are dug they come back as a solid block instead of 4 lumps of clay. Colored clays are meant to be building blocks. Default clay blocks were meant to be a way of conserving inventory space (like compressed cobble for cobble or metal blocks for ingots).
  • Colored clay blocks are pastel alternatives to the bright colors of wool blocks in the default texture pack.
  • There are 15 colors of clay (16 if you count default clay).
  • White clay has been added because not all texture packs show default clay as white (or light grey).
  • Colored clay blocks are compatible with the saw.
  • Colored clay blocks have a reverse craft recipe that produces a regular clay block in the output and changes the colored clay block to its respective colored dye.
  • The colored clay crafting recipe is 1 clay block + 1 dye = 1 colored clay block.

Updates
  • Overview maps updated to 2015_07_04.
  • MoreBlock's updated to 2015_07_04 release.
    • This update removed the slope recipes so the recipe display near spawn and the recipes in the slopes info file don't work any more. But that is OK because...
    • Slopes (and a few new slopes) are now in the saw's menu! You don't have to remember the recipes any more and you can see the slope shapes before making them.
    • This update affects the mese lamp stuff made in the saw and the steelbrush. The saw-made mese lamp stuff doesn't glow and the steelbrush isn't coded for the slopes. I've added those to my ToDo list.
  • Unified Inventory updated to 2015_06_28 release.
    • The update allows for a cut-down, greatly reduced functionality version of Unified Inventory intended for small devices. Our server is for full-sized PC's so the full-sized Unified Inventory is the version that will continue to be used on our server.
  • WorldEdit updated to 2015_06_18 release.
    • Code maintenance; no new toys.
  • The info files have been cleaned-up, "tips" and "destinations" have been fixed, and a few, new, info files have been added. Type /info list to see the new file's names and descriptions.

One of the new info files is "privs". It is a brief description of our server's priv upgrade policy. Below is a copy of the text and I will add it to the first post of this thread as well.

~~~~~~~~~~
Privs
~~~~~~~~~~

  • Don't ask to be an admin or moderator. Admins and moderators are chosen,
in secret, after a very long period of observation and debate between Miner_48er
    and LazyJ.
  • Privs are granted based on merit and good behavior.
  • With higher level privs comes the expectation of more responsibility from the
player. It is because of this expectation that it usually takes a long time to
    be granted higher privs.
  • **Known and trusted** admins from other servers may be granted higher privs as a
professional courtesy. Don't try to con us; we have a network of contacts among
the other servers to know about admins.
  • There is no defined time for when privs are upgraded. It is literally up to
LazyJ and Miner_48er to determine if you are eligible or not.
  • "Spill" and "twist" privs are granted after a few weeks of observation if the
player has not caused any problems.
  • "Fly" is granted after a few months of observation for good behavior.
  • "Kick, ban/xban, basic_privs" are granted to mature players who have been on
our server a long time and thoroughly understand our rules and expectations of
    conduct.
  • "Areas_high_limit" is granted after a player has used-up their already large
allotment of Areas, proven to be a prolific builder of good quality builds, and
has proven to be a pillar of our community.
  • Privs higher than these are at moderator and admin levels.

Hiding screenshots in spoiler tags will not decrease the load time. Only by reducing the height/width, resolution and compressing the images can help there.

Free programs like IrFanView, PNGGauntlet (for Windows) or pngquant, optipng (for Linux) or a web-based app like CompressPNG.com can compress Minetest's png screenshots. IrFanView is a multi-tool that can do more than image reduction and compression.

I encourage players from our server to post screenshots on this thread because it makes our thread a photo-journal of our server. There are many photo-hosting services but they are scattered and varied. This thread is all about our server, including screenshots, in one place.

Yes, large, high resolution, uncompressed screenshots make pages load much slower but I would rather our players post screenshots than not.

This server is very-very impressive, has lots of nice and interesting buildings, lots of masterpieces, just walking alone is very interesting. Example shot from the side: https://i.imgur.com/VJpIKFq.png I'm amazed.

Be sure to use 64 bit minetest and have lots of RAM (or use tweaks in minetest.conf). 32 bit will crash without tweaks in config.

Thanks, Fixerol ;)

Nice night-time screenshot too!

The tweaks Fixerol is referring to are adding these two lines to the minetest.conf file:

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
enable_mesh_cache = false
client_unload_unused_data_timeout = 60

Newer versions of 0.4.12-dev already have the mesh_cache set to false. Older versions of 0.4.12 don't have this. If you're not sure which 0.4.12 you have, go ahead and add the "enable_mesh_cache = false". HomeDecor, MoreBlocks, and now the default Minetest game use mesh nodes. Disabling the cache will free-up some RAM.

Client_unload_unused_data_timeout tells Minetest when to get rid of data that's not being used any more. If you teleport to some far away location, say to check-out a friend's newly completed build, and then teleport back to continue work on your project, Minetest will unload the data from visiting your friend's build after 60 seconds.

Updates:
  • The fences mod's fence posts and gates can now be used as medium-burn fuels (1 post or gate cooked 5 cobble into stone in my tests).
  • A few more blocks have been made saw compatible:
    • Streak-free and wood framed glass from HomeDecor's submod "Building Blocks".
    • Silver and tin blocks from MoreOres.
    • MoreBlocks' empty bookshelf and various wood tile blocks as well as trap stone and the different trap glasses (along with their glass_cube counter-parts). The empty bookshelf was added mostly for the half-slab version (narrow shelves) and different pattern options for pixel artists to use . The wood tile blocks can be cut-down to look like small, wooden containers and the new slope options may create interesting designs with the wood tile's various patterns. The trap stuff can be cut-down into thin panels to use where a full-sized block may be too bulky. Creative, structural design possibilities

I'm not saying anything like that. I suggest that you hide screenshots/images on a spoiler, because if you don't, the page is very long. Me, and I'm sure that a bunch of other people, don't like a thread where all the page is covered in pictures, that actually, look the same.

SirDerpingtun4, our server is a good server because we adhere to the rules. The server rules are shown to players each time they log in. The very first rule is: "No griefing. Do not destroy or vandalise other people's stuff." because it is that important to us.

The second rule that is displayed is "No stealing." That rule is also very important because our players work long and hard to gather materials to create with.

All to often, when banned players have been given another chance (and in some cases, as many as third and fourth chances), these players continued to grief and steal. As a result, bans are permanent.

There are many other servers out there; just look on the public server list in your client's menu or in this "Servers" forum. When you find another server, abide by their rules and strive to become a good and trusted member of their community.

Bugs and Crashes

It's been brought to my attention that the recycling recipes won't work with *stacks* of materials.

If you put one red wool block in the crafting grid, one white wool block will appear in the output slot. When you take the white wool from the output slot, the red wool block in the grid is replaced with one red dye. This works.

However, if you put a stack of red wool blocks in the crafting grid, you can still pull the matching amount of white wool blocks from the output slot but the red wool blocks won't be replaced with red dye. Minetest's replacement function just isn't made for bulk replacements.

I've added a note about the problem to my ToDo list for the server. This is a low priority problem considering how cheap dyes and base materials are and because there are several other tasks, that came before this, that I have to work through. Whatever the solution works-out to be, it won't be a quick fix.

The server has had some crashes over the past few days. The logs tell me the line of code where the errors occurred but not the actions that triggered them. Without that bit of info I'm not able to test to make sure the code is fixed.

A couple of the crashes were caused by the money mod. My best guess, at the moment, is an old shop chest(s) was found that hadn't been reset since the mod was updated.

As for the other crashes they were random things that hadn't caused crashes before from mods that have not been recently updated or tinkered with.

Hiccups happen. The server crashes a few times and then has gone on without a crash again for months.

The OS's cron checks, at 15 minutes past the hour and 45 minutes past the hour, to see if the Minetest server is running. Unless it is a serious crash, the cron will automatically restart the Minetest server.

There is one thing, I probably should mention again for newcomers who haven't read this thread's first post yet. The server shuts-down everyday at 10am GMT/5am EDT, for about twenty minutes, to run its backups. There is no warning so it can seem like a crash.

Hi,
Could I please change my character skin to the penguin that Worldblender has?
Thank you so much! I really like playing on this server! :)

As for the coloring of wool, my colormachine might be of help. It doesn't recycle any dyes it scrubs off from nodes - but that's not a big problem as cheap dye sources can be used (i.e. coal or cactus). Save the flowers :-)
A list of my mods can be found here.

Kpenguin, I asked Worldblender if it was OK with him to use his skin. He would like to keep his skin unique on our server.

Please find another "tux" skin, a different skin, or customize one for yourself. A great resource is minecraftskins.com. That link is for the "stock" skins. You can also create your own skin on their editor page.

Most of our regular players have skins that are unique to them. It's one of the things that helps to better identify them (easier to describe them to other players, too).

Soko, thanks for the suggestion ;)

Recycling is a key element. It started as an experiment and it turns-out that we have several thrifty players among our regulars. Many of the crafting recipes' output has been increased, by a lot, which throws a spanner into the works of the existing recycling method. (Outputs for recipes were increased to encourage players to decorate more and to build with materials other than cobble while still requiring at least a little bit of time and effort on the part of the players - discourages the server-hopping, "gimme" players.).

Hello all!

I play online as Dusken, and I just want to say Thank You to all of you. You've been so welcoming the last couple of days as I get used to the server. I like all the custom stuff (e.g. no drowning, yay!), and apparently this is a HUGE sized server. Not used to having so much to explore.

I'm looking forward to building and planting, and creating a nice little place here at the bay that I settled at.

Thanks, Dusken, and welcome to our server. ;)

Update
  • Hardwood (building_blocks:hardwood) can now be rotated with the screwdriver.
  • Axes (and picks and shovels) have been fixed so they don't wear-out when harvesting leaves and they instantly dig the leaves just like the wield-hand. The wield-hand is actually doing the work instead of the tool, hence no tool wear. As a bonus effect, most any other hand-held item that can be placed in the world will also instantly cut leaves. For example, refrigerators will cut leaves just as fast as a diamond axe.

Mentioning axes,... it used to be that mese axes were coded to chop faster than diamond axes but that was corrected in the official, default game some time ago.

Update:

  • Overview maps updated to 2015_08_09.
  • Farming soils (tilled dry and tilled wet) can be rotated with the screwdriver to better suit the flow of the land.
  • FAKE dry and wet farming soils have been added. The wet version will not dry-out; neither will revert to regular dirt but they won't grow crops either. These are intended to simulate empty fields or to be used in pixel art. These fake soils also work with the screwdriver. (suggestion by klappspaten)
  • Potting soil has been added. Potting soil is a dark version of dirt that will grow crops without needing to be near water but is intended to be used for flower beds.
  • Fakegrass now works with the screwdriver. This is so dirt footpaths can have a feathered-grass edging and can also be used in flower beds with the same feathered-grass edging effect. Fakegrass is still fakegrass... no crop compatibility. (suggestion by klappspaten)
  • These additions will be active after tonight's backup.

Thanks for changing my skin!
I was wondering if a mod could be installed that lets you see what other players are holding in their hand. The 3D armor mod has a "wield view" configuration option that enables you to do that. I would like to be able to see this.
Let me know what you think of this.
Thanks! :)

Howdy, Kpenguin ;)

I checked-out 3D Armor a while ago and it didn't support many of the mods we use in LinuxGaming. I've added it to my ToDo list for the server to look at and study again.

No promises that it will be installed.

If I can figure out how it works to add support for our mods, the next task would be to disable/remove all of the armor. LinuxGaming is not a battle server. Swords were removed to reinforce this fact. Add in armor would go against that so I would want all reference to armor removed before the wield-hand display effect is added.

I still have a long list of things to take care of first so it will be quite a while before I can look into the 3D Armor mod again.

Dragonop, best with the bare hand, it received that functionality because of the fact that there are no swords!

Update

Today I had to remove three, tree "towers" from in and around Spawntown.

The somewhat new player who created these towers has *not* been banned because they at least didn't create the towers to grief. I wish the player had used a little better judgement before creating them, though.

The problem with the towers was that they are not suitable for Spawntown.

Spawntown is a town, intended for town-like builds, confined in 15m x 15m lots, defined by a grid of roads surrounding the lots.

Creating giant, fantasy, super-trees, to maybe someday make into a tree village (like an Ewok village, for example) is a really cool idea if created in a rural forest area - *not* in an urban city area.

Folks, if you are going to build in an area that is already being developed, build in a style that is suitable for that area.

If the area's builds are contemporary urban, then build in a contemporary urban style.

If the area's builds are medieval looking, then build in a medieval style.

Have some consideration for your fellow builders and the server as a whole.

When in doubt, ask the admins, moderators, or the regulars who have been on the server for a long time. They will be familiar with the server's customs, protocols, and community standards.

To the player who created the tree towers, I saved the furnaces, their contents, and some of the other stuff in the trees. When we are ingame together again, remind me and I'll return the stuff to you.

Update

  • Violet, magenta, pink, red, and yellow colored clays have had their hues and tints adjusted a bit. A little more blue in the violet and magenta clays, more yellow in the red clay, more red in the pink clay, and the yellow clay has been tinted down a little so it isn't as bright. The colored clays are intended to be the calm, pastel color pallet of the server while the colored wools are the bright, vibrant color pallet.
  • Building Blocks half-slabs work with the screwdriver now.
  • MoreBlocks has been updated to the 2015_07_31 release. No new toys; another batch of alternate recipes and the mesh-nodes have been cleaned-up a bit. As for all those alternate crafting recipes that MoreBlocks adds to craft stuff that can be done in the saw, I'm considering disabling those alternate recipes to reduce the number of alternate recipes players have to cycle through. For example, the default wood block has 20 alternate crafting recipes - 17 of those are from MoreBlocks. The three remaining alternate recipes are the ones that are actually used more frequently. Those 17 others can be done in the saw's output or recycling slots.
