What I would recommend is first making the world in single player, then upload the to a Linode VPS. Then install Minetest either from the official repos if using Arch Linux, or from the ppa if using Ubuntu. Upload stuff to ~/.minetest (into the respective worlds and mods folders)

Someone else will have to help you het the server onto the public serverlist, as I don't know how this is done.
