[Question]The mods should be clasificated?

by MineYoshi » Fri Sep 25, 2015 14:21

Well i say this because i was with my cousin two years ago? ahh yes medium year ago.
And this happened my little cousin was with me (seeing how to play) and from repent i found an oerkki (Pilz Adam Mobs(yes i use it)) and my cousin of the fear starts to cry because the oerkki and i fix it showing him Mickey Mouse Cartoon and Pink Panther but anyways that maked me thought about something :
Suposly Minetest is a game for everyone, NO? And some mods aren't for everyone likely those ones with some scary mobs. And well i think because that some mods should be clasificated, some have religious content like this https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?id=812 and some have content not for kids like blood content.
It's only a question an idea BUT is responsibility of the fathers what are watching his sons.
ONLY IS AN IDEA OK MAYBE CAN BE MAKE BUT WELL ANYWAYS IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE FATHERS TAKE CARE OF HIS SONS.
WE THE MINETEST COMUNITY ONLY MAKE MINETEST BETTER.

I think that making a topic that lists all "family friendly" mods could solve the problem. The forum it's very subdivided and it wouldn't be very useful to add another category/filter to the forums.
But I agree, there should be a way to show mods that would be most appropriate for those who seek to entertain younger players.

I see no reason why people couldn't provide rating in the mod titles, E for Everyone, T for teen, etc, or something along those lines, maybe omitting the E as most all would fall in that, the only trick would be getting all the modders to update their threads titles to have some sort of content code.
I record Minetest videos, Mod reviews, Modding tutorials, and Lets plays.

Rating sounds like a easy thing to do. But actually it is not easy at all. There are several problems that connect to ratings.

To make rating work these problems (and quite possibly a lot of others) have do be addressed.
  • Who rates?
    The modders?
A rating committee? How is that committee elected? For how long is that committee elected?
A public voting system? How is that system implemented? Who gets to vote? ...
    Is rating voluntary or compulsory?
    ...
  • Who controls?
    The users?
A controlling committee? How is that committee elected? For how long is that committee elected?
A public voting system? How is that system implemented? Who gets to vote? ...
When where and how is controlling run? Every time the mod changes? ...
What are the consequences if controll thinks that the rating is wrong?
    ...
  • What are the categories?
For example "family friendly" might sound like good category. But in fact it is not. "family friendly" has a very broad set of meanings differing with ethics, laws, personal taste and so on. What is considered perfectly "family friendly" in europe might get you straight to prison in the land of the free. There are even those out there who think that spanking your kids is "family friendly" namely the pope (as long as it is not in the face and done with dignity (however that may be possible)).
Who gets to set the categories? The modders? The users? yet another committee? ...
    ...
The point is: I think rating is only good for one thing and that is delegating your own responsibility to someone else.
Maybe the current way of doing things is not that bad. Just read the description of the mod before you install it.
Trying to stay me.

sure that's right but i think sometimes is good than the fathers have responsibility with his sons and see what they download.
The minetest modders aren't babby-sitters or nannys

As Sane pointed out already it's very difficult to do any classification in that regard. If a child is young enough to be scared by the monsters here, I'm afraid the parents will have to take a look at the game and the installed mods first and check out if it's suitable for their child at its current stage of development. They're the ones who know their child and its capabilites best.

I's odd that an Oerkki caused fear. That's certainly not their intention. Perhaps there where other factors involved. The child was watching you play - not playing by itshelf. That may have an effect already. Sometimes things seem scary if we have no control about them and they just appear totally unexpectedly out of nowhere, move around inexplicibly and grant us no control about them. As Oerkki are usually not that strong, wearing armor and allowing the child to control the game and take a look at the Oerkki from all sides while not getting harmed by it might perhaps have helped. They're actually cute in a way, and the child might have got pity for the poor mobs slaughtered by you :-)

Hostile mobs might not be suitable for very young children. Most mob mods afaik come with the option to disable those.

Young children may also prefer other blocks that are more colorfui or provide sounds or whatever. Perhaps parents can open a thread and create a small subgame that's particulary suitable for small children? Colorful blocks, easily available (flower + cobble or wood -> colored block and keep the flower), alongside with some friendly wool providers and a few chicken might be enough already. Plus something that moves something else when punched. But I guess parents of children at the right age know far better what their children like than we may :-)
A list of my mods can be found here.
