Please help a n00b install mods!

by Bigmama2 » Tue Mar 08, 2016 20:54

Hi I'm new! I can't find a "help noobs install mods" thread or discussion so I'm so sorry if this thread is offensive! I've looked and looked!!

We've had Minetest for a week now and I can not figure out mods :( I run Linux Mint 17 and we play Minetest v0.4.13 which I installed in terminal by following this blog: http://linuxg.net/install-minetest-on-ubuntu/ I have no idea what "RUN_IN_PLACE" or "globally installed" mean and I can't find the ~/.minetest folder or $path_user folder :( so while the "How do I install mods?" thread was helpful up to the advice to rename the folder to the mod name.... it just loses me after that.

Everywhere I try to learn how to install mods says it's "super easy" and just "unzip" the file to the "mods" folder in my minetest directory, rename it, and bam! mods. The closest I have come to a working mod is getting mobs (PilzAdam-mobs-c49cc47) to the point where we can hear them and see a black box when the crosshair is pointed directly at the mob, but not see them. I get missing mesh errors. I spent a week getting them to that point, but finally unistalled them cause FRUSTRATION.

Very little specific help is available on Bing searches. No one else seems to experience our problems, like not a single mention of a missing meshes bug for the mobs? I guess I have a unique situation? I have 2 mods folders in two minetest directories.
usr/share/minetest/games/minetest_game/mods
and
usr/share/games/minetest/games/minetest_game/mods

So, I have tried copying the unzipped files into both mods folders. I can't unzip directly into the directories because it needs root permissions and I can't figure out how to grant root permission to the ArchiveManager so I extract them to my downloads folder, and then copy the extracted folder to my "mods" folders after changing the name to whatever I believe the creator wants the folder named by reading through the discussions on the mod thread where it's posted, i.e. "fire" or "mobs" or weirdly enough, "teleport_potion" for the Simple Skins [0.4] [simple_skins] mod? Usually I get no reaction from Minetest, rarely I get an error. Nothing EVER shows up in the mods tab nor is included in the list of mods to enable in the Server "Configure" screen. :( I even go in as root and enable all file permissions to create and delete files, or access all files and it doesn't seem to help. I am at my wits end.

I thought this "[Mod] Simple Skins [0.4] [simple_skins]" mod would help since it only has two pages of discussions so promises to be WAY less buggy and expert hack knowledge required..... but I get the errors pictured. Also, I finally came upon a thread where someone finally mentioned where to find the debug.txt..... in the bin folder of the minetest directory??? I've checked ALL the minetest directories and can't find a bin folder :(( So I can't even properly ask for help? D: Please help a n00b out!!! Have mercy! This is such a fun game, my kids love it! We just want mobs and to change our character skins. But if I can be helped.... we might be able to do more.... Thank you for whoever has patience to help <3 :,(

I duckducked go a bit and i found this! = D

I thinkis useless, but helps to know a bit more if you don't understand

Hope It Works
I have puppy linux (in some way similar to Linux Mint) And i can help you!

If you don't know where is bin folder only enter to usr/share/games/minetest/bin/

I think there is the folder, or instead do something, make a reply in the topic saying: "Your mod don't works in my pc, haves Linux Mint...."

The creator maybe say you: "I need the debug.txt content first!"

Or maybe because you change the name of the mod folders!
When you make a mod, the name of the folder is the name of the mod!

If you change the name to someone that don't correspond to the code (Item strings, is something complicated in someway!)

You say you want simple skins:

Be sure that the name of the mod folder is simple_skins
And that the original folder isn't under a folder!

That sometimes cause the error!

If that don't works or if you don't understand say me!

Thank you so much for helping! <3

If you don't know where is bin folder only enter to usr/share/games/minetest/bin/

Please see attached screenshot! I don't have a bin folder there. :( Should I create one?

Be sure that the name of the mod folder is simple_skins
And that the original folder isn't under a folder!

Will try this! Thank you!

I will watch the video now! I only know a little ASL so this will be good practice, but I hope I don't need to be fluent to understand? Thank you! <3

I changed the simple_skins mod folder to "simple_skins" and now no more error! The /setskin command returns an affirmative.... but the skin doesn't change :( No errors, and no change. :( Still watching the video :)

Be surely when you copy the mod folder you didn't deleted any textures!

Or if you do everything correct and continues the bug, then asks TenPlus1 (i think he is the creator of simple_skins) or who be the creator, that there is a bug, and what to do in that case!

Second, if you don't have a bin folder , simply minetest will don't work, in bin folder there are some dll. files that Minetest needs to work as the Irrlicht file that is the engine in some way!

Or instead search somewhere, in the share folder, search in other folders that don't be game, Minetest can be in apps or in any folder like that, or that builtin folder!

And in that screenshots there isn't the mods folder, where is?

Maybe is a "useless" folder!
Isn't the correct as i said, better search in other parts of you OS locations!

Thanks so much!

No bin folder. Does Linux have .dll files?? I didn't think so. I looked in the share folder, anywhere else minetest would install it? I would like to give the debug info if/when I run into bugs to help developers.... But the bin is still AWOL :(

And in that screenshots there isn't the mods folder, where is?

A few more steps in for that one:
usr/share/games/minetest/games/minetest_game/mods

The folder the guy used in the video was the other one I showed you at:
usr/share/minetest/games/minetest_game/mods

and that's the one where I have my working mods now. I've looked through all the folders in both those locations and no bin so far :(

Try searching other places for the bin folder, sure you checked up:
usr/share/games/minetest/games/minetest_game/mods

or instead games bin, apps?

Just be sure about you searched everywhere!

Or try re-installing Minetest!

In simple skins mod use either the inventory plus button or /skins command to change player skin live and the /setskin to set a personal skin for a player which requires them to log out and back in again to take effect.

ummm

Well, better try what TenPlus1 said, try that command if that works, or in the default subgame, put your skin as the character texture, if you don't know of what i talk, say me!

The simple_skins mod works now that I redownloaded it and installed it in the usr/share/minetest/games/minetest_game/mods folder instead of the usr/share/games/minetest/games/minetest_game/mods folder and made sure it was renamed simple_skins. :) Thanks guys! But still no bin folder, and in exploring the possibility of subgames I also discovered I have no worlds folder either. :/ My kids all have Windows machines and they all have bin and worlds folders :/ Where does Linux put them?

There won't be a bin folder on Linux, everything will be saved in home/.minetest.
If you don't see a .minetest folder it is likely that your computer isn't showing hidden folders, which can be toggled with CTRL + H or using the menu option and under view there is an option.

OK, Nathan.S said it, only search in that folder, but i am confused, i had puppy linux and bin folder was in /usr/share/applications/minetest-0.4.13

Maybe in Linux Mint is different the situation...

Yes! Nathan thank you! The debug.txt and worlds folder are both in that folder! :) It was hidden! Now I can ask for help with errors with the helpful debug info! :D
