It depends on what your PC is like, and what you mean by lag
Some simple things you could try:
>set the view range to something low like 30-50 nodes
>disable clouds, shaders, smooth lighting, particles, and texture filters
>use simple leaves
>try changing the video driver
>try disabling cinematic mode
Look! I have a signature :]

You could also try reducing the maximum fps, or turn on/off vsync.
Also if you're using windows, try using one of these builds https://minetest.kitsunemimi.pw/builds/
and direct3d instead of opengl

Latest is prone to errors. It is not stable at all. Always go with stable unless you want to stay up to date on whats going on and don't mind things not working. I have both on my PC. That's how I know about the zoom.

1 GB is really low - the OS alone will probably claim much of it.
Also: Windows / Linux, what graphics-card ?

And "slow" / low FPS is not the same as "lag" / high ping / caused by network or server.

(i will go see the graphics card as soon as i am allowed to turn on the PC XD )

UPDATE:
hold on, i forgot to mention. its using an integrated graphics card ^_^ . . . i know thats bad V_V

I think some of server performace settings will reduce memory use
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1825
and you can make map load smaller area which should help memory
# The allowed adjustment range for the automatic rendering range adjustment.
# Set this to be equal to viewing range minimum to disable the auto-adjustment algorithm.
# type: int
# viewing_range_nodes_max = 160

# The allowed adjustment range for the automatic rendering range adjustment.
# Set this to be equal to viewing range maximum to disable the auto-adjustment algorithm.
# type: int
# viewing_range_nodes_min = 35

and probably best thing is to kill all programs you're not using on you computer while playing. auto update, virus scan ect.

You could run MT at nearly constant 60 FPS with this ;)

I wasn't able to run it with constant 60 FPS on an i7 and a GTX970 with official Nvidia drivers on Linux.
