Angkor Wat

by slopsbucket » Mon Sep 03, 2018 07:02

Still a work in progress.

[Edit] Working floor plan available: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=17419#p261909 [End Edit]

I'm resurrecting an old project I started many years ago, here's a pic of the map I'm using.

This page is a journal of the build, scroll down and look at the pictures to see how I'm doing.

You can also view my work on OldCoder's server and download the map if you wish. It will also be updated periodically.

viewforum.php?f=88

Cheers,

Andrew.

It's still growing.

At the moment I'm just fleshing out the sections of the map, but you can already see that the map is wrong.

This is the most detailed and accurate map I was able to find however. I'll flesh it out according to the map first, then I'll sculpt it back and shift a few bits to make it look like the photographs. Hopefully between the two of these methods I should be able to build something reasonably accurate.

Once I'm happy with the structure itself I'll start thinking about different textures.

Cheers,

Andrew.

The same exercise I went through last time I tried to build this, working out which lines in the map to follow and which to ignore. Pulled out a chainsaw and started carving.

I haven't quite got it there yet but I'm getting closer.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Hi Everyone.

Exactly the same as last time I started building this, I had to start again from scratch.

When you superimpose this map over a satellite image you can’t make it fit no matter how you stretch it. Also, it doesn’t match photographs you can find on the internet.

So I started again, this time using the same scale but making everything match what I could see in photos, and by making everything fit the dimensions that were dictated mathematically by religious doctrine at the time. If you can’t make a fibonacci number fit then the number is 7. Perfect symmetry, perfect squares, perfect circles.

Now I have something that can be superimposed over a satellite image as well as fitting photos and maths. That has to be close to the real thing, surely.

I’m building it over the top of that floor plan so you can see the difference. It won’t take me very long to make it grow, just as I did with the previous one, so stay tuned.

Cheers,

Andrew.

3rd try.

That map above is wrong, count the pillars in the central walkways.

It's a shame, I was building it up and it was looking really good, on the outside.

This time it should be right.

The new map looks like it's going to be a winner.

Bucket World might be getting an update soon,

Still growing.

You can explore this "live" if you like.
Just give your Minetest the address:

minebest.org
port: 30022

once you're in type the command:

/angkor

to zoom straight there.

(please note that minebest is spelt with a "b", not a "t")

Cheers,

Re: Angkor Wat

My maths was wrong!

There is absolutely no way that the roof can be made to fit those walls, it simply can't happen, end of story. People can draw all the fanciful floor maps they like, if the roof don't fit then it's wrong.

So I've started again, this time using a purely mathematical model of how it must be in order for the roof to fit. Making the whole thing fit pure mathematics and nothing else is a lot more difficult than one would think, and it's giving me something very different from that original floor plan.

I hope this information interests some people, if this isn't education then I don't know what is. The eye can deceive but the maths never lies. I'm about four hours into creating a working floor plan and should be satisfied in another couple of hours.

It might seem like I keep returning to the beginning but in reality I've come a long way, and as you've seen over the last few days, the building itself doesn't really take that long but if the floor plan is wrong....

Cheers,

Andrew.

OK ladies and gentlemen, this is what the maths says is really there.

So now it'll take me another day or so to get back to the stage I was at, but this time the roof will fit.

Cheers,

Andrew.

I had to do a bit more jigging around with the central Sanctuary area to make maths and photos coincide, but this time I think I've got it right.

And as you can see, the actual build won't really take all that much time.

Cheers,

Andrew.

It feels nice when I manage to kick a goal.

My maths worked out. I still have to jiggle a couple of pillars around but everything is starting to fit like it's supposed to. Centre of towers line up with centre of rooves and centre of rooms.

And it's starting to look more like the real one too. Don't worry about textures, I can always change them later.

Cheers,

Andrew.

You won't see much change for a little while, I'm doing ceilings and things.

You can visit this if you like, send your Minetest to:

Still proceeding at a reasonable pace.

I find it interesting that laying this out according to my formula is now starting to fit that base map again, except for one area at the front.

I now have the entire area properly mapped.

I still have a lot of work to do but all the floor heights are now properly set and I can finally get rid of most of those black lines.

Angkor Wat
Looking hot
With buildings all in place

Finished not
Needs a lot
It’s a long haul, not a race.

This has been uploaded to Bucket World. You're welcome to come and take a peek.

So far it looks like I've been making very rapid progress but that's about to change.

This really is only a rough outline of the finished build. Now I have to start jiggling every thing around and making it look right. Internal lighting, pillar and window placements, doorways and stairs, there's a lot more to do yet.

In a very real sense I'm not much past the halfway mark.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Still progressing steadily, the entire front section is now complete.

It won't be much longer before I start work on the towers.

[EDIT]

Angkor Wat has now been rotated so that it faces West instead of East, just like it does in the real world.

This could not have been achieved so quickly and efficiently without major assistance from OldCoder.

It took some serious innovation to be able to do that successfully.

Come have a look in game.

Changes aren't going to be very obvious in pictures for a while but there's still a considerable amount of work happening, lifting bits, stretching bits, tweaking all over.

Once I'm happy with the shape of the entire structure I'll add the towers and probably change textures.

I've been saving the towers for last as a surprise. They'll be a surprise to me too because I still haven't figured out how I'm going to do them yet. :)

Last pic for the day.

Refinements and more refinements. It's impossible to be entirely accurate at this scale but I'm getting it as close as I can. One example of what makes it difficult is the stairs, I only have 2 options for steepness and this governs how far out the surrounding buttressing must extend from the walls.

Accuracy is not possible, but this is by far the closest model I have yet seen.

I hope some of you are enjoying watching this project grow.
