I'm not quite sure if it started in 20120606 as I didn't have time to check earlier versions but any newly generated map seems to have exactly 1 block ditches intersecting in exactly 90 degrees. It's as if someone took a grid and removed blocks in exactly that shape.
Does anyone else experience this behaviour on new maps?

Yes. This is something to do with the chunky map generator.
