Development state

by RealBadAngel » Sun Nov 25, 2012 11:52

Hi all,
just wanted to say a few words before i leave.
c55 made an excellent work, but now hes killin the project.
He blocks everything, whatever comes out, he dont like,or sayin it could be done better.
Sure, i havent seen perfect code made from start.
But this way we got development tree and patches got merged by MIRACLE or by some1 else.
And people are leaving.
So im doing now. Bye all, was nice to play around with you (not with you c55).

You just expect things to get merged without testing or further development.

You want new features. I want stability in MT for all (my) machines. We all want different things.

In the long run, minetest has the potential for almost any modification imaginable, but how "high" one can build in terms of additions to the game depend on the stability of the base.

The more stable and better organized the code basic code is, the easier it is to contribute with new addons, and the more people will be willing to do so.

Oh look, it's the "amg Minetest development is slower than Minecraft! the guy making it is getting $0 but he should make things faster than the Minecraft devs do!" thread!

A lot of pull requests are merged by PilzAdam or thexyz...

Of course he rejects the changes he doesn't like! It's his game!

If Celeron55 accepted every change people made, the game would be so very flawed.

Yes. That. Stability is MUCH more important then new features. But then again, I play mostly vanilla Mintetest (admittedly, I do use some security stuff such as block protection), so I'm clearly not looking for loads of fancy features.

Another vote for stability.

I don't really know how to do a pull request, so PilzAdam was even helping me get a change made over IRC. It's not like all changes are disapproved.

well, stability-shmability. Oldcoder already did a high-stabilty fork. i don't knwo if he tried to get it upstream, but either way, stability can be achieved and MT can have a gazillion tool features. everyone happy. somehow it isn't done so, infortunately.

i do not understand minetest is free software so if your beloved feature does not get into upstream you can simply fork the game and start your project eventually if you were right the two projects will merge into a single codebase isn't opensource driven by inspiration competition and collaboration towards a goal?

Yes, that's one of the things I love about open source software. If you don't like how it's being developed, you can just take the current code, add whatever you want, and start your own project.

I haven't taken the time to do that with any software, but it's nice to know I COULD, if I wanted to.

its a new game... it takes TIME to make such games like minetest work without a single bug or glitch or whatever. and minetest is free, wich makes it better then minecraft, and minetest is going to be one of minecrafts rivals when it gets to version 1.0. mine test is awesome because it has lots of mods that make it be what you whant it to be. for example, if you whant sheeps and pigs, you install the simple mobs mod. if you whanna see nyancats around, install nyancats mode, if you whant to go to the nether, you install nether mod. if you whant seasons mod,if you dont like the way it looks, you install texture, and if you whant 3D players, you download stfan5`s minetest 0.44.6. and all this for free and simpler than in minecraft.
Give me your fireball!!!
