Fresh download of minetest 0.4.4 stable causes this in new world:

How to fix it (to get default textures)?

This is because of the shaders are most likely missing, as a temporary fix you can turn off shaders in the game options.

Please make sure you have the client folder in your minetest install (see here for more details: http://minetest.net/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=55087#p55087))

EDIT: I just checked the latest stable release and it does contain the client folder with shaders, have you built from source? if so just copy across the client folder and all its contents into the folder that contains your minetest files, If you see the post I made above (via the link) it will explain what the folder should look like and where you need to put it.

From what I read somewhere on the forum, some graphics cards or graphics processing units (GPUs), I forget which, can't handle shaders. In that case, even a properly compiled copy of the game won't look right. Disabling shaders will still fix the problem.

EDIT: Fixed a typo

Another thing that can cause the red land issue is if you have your video_driver set to direct3d instead of opengl as the shaders are written for opengl not direct3d so switching your video_driver in your minetest.conf to opengl may also solve the problem if it isn't already set as opengl.

Just disable shaders. I had this problem and this is the cure (for me).
Some Mods: Castles Prefab Camouflage
My Games: Nostalgia Realtest Revamped
Servers: See above games.
