Apples not decaying

Apples should decay like leaves, so should be in the leafdecay group, but they are not.

The problem is, that leafdecay only drops the items if they are != the decaying node (i.e. it drops only saplings and not the leaves itself).
For apples that would mean that they would be lost.

It could then be good to add an abm to drop apples if they are not near tree nodes.

Why not make them fall like sand and gravel? We need "plantlike" rendering for entities (a mesh could be used but this is not "optimal"), though.

Also, some of us build out of apples. Having them decay would not be good.

For example, I add them to my furnace rooms sometimes and call them "kitchens".

Make them fall, not like sand/gravel, but like torches, rails, etc. do - when there are no neighboring nodes to hang onto.

What about making a leaves_with_apple node (normal leaves texture with a small apple on it) that decays like leaves and drops an apple when dug?

I don't like that. It's limiting. Although it would only be an issue in limited circumstances, it prevents user-place floating apples as well.

I've considered that, but for another reason. Apples look like they occupy a hollow in the leaves. Making a leaves && apple node would fix both problems. Not only that, but we don't even need a new texture to make it work. We can use "default_leaves.png^default_apple.png".

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
minetest.register_node("default:leaves_with_apple", {
    description = "Leaves with Apple",
    drawtype = "allfaces_optional",
    visual_scale = 1.3,
    tiles = {"default_leaves.png^default_apple.png"},
    paramtype = "light",
    groups = {snappy=3, leafdecay=3, flammable=2},
    drop = "default:apple"
    },
    sounds = default.node_sound_leaves_defaults(),
})

And in mapgen.lua:
Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
minetest.register_alias("mapgen_apple", "default:leaves_with_apple")

This is called "halfbelief"... ("From Two to Five" by Kornei Chukovsky)
The same people that were saying about smth being unreal, now agree with possibility of building with apples O_o
Ok. Make apple node drop apple with 100% probability - just like dirt drops "dirt entity" apple would drop "apple entity" when dug.
That would not prevent from building with apples - just like it did not prevent from building with dirt.

Would is nice in normal game, but it is not working when the leaves are not walkable (when you want climbable trees).

I like the idea with the leaves with apple, that would make it easier for the autoplant mod ;) And you would avoid a lot of problems.

I'm the one who is talking about building with apples, and I'm also the one who argues AGAINST making changes just for the sake of making the game more realistic. As far as I'm concerned, as long as the world is made of cubes, it must not be intended to be a realistic game. I think you have me mixed up with someone else.

Where did I say that I was talking about you? You're not the only one at MT forums and definitely not the center of the world ;)

Nevertheless... If you want to speak about it, then here's my point:
Actually, before I start... I would like to say, that I don't need some sarcastic notices/interjections here and therefore I ask of you to not get offended. Please, it's really simple :)

Oh, here's what I have to say:
If anyone is for cubes game, then what he/she is doing here? In this thread?
I mean, if someone "Ok" with building with apples, then why he/she should be concerned about them not decaying? If I were that person, I would simply stay away from this thread, as everything is just right. Or at least repeated again & again that this is cubic game and not decaying apples are as normal as holes in the tree trunks made by player or as normal as stone blocks hanging in the air.

As for you... I really don't understand you. But that's because of you.
Let me explain what made me think what I'm thinking.
You've said this:
As far as I'm concerned, as long as the world is made of cubes, it must not be intended to be a realistic game.

But if that's so then why smth not realistic as this:
Apples look like they occupy a hollow in the leaves.

bothers you?
So even if you clearly stated that you're not for realism, you still concerned about non-realistic look of apple node.
And where is the line by crossing which we become too realistic? Or look&feel is different from some natural things like decaying or gravity? That's what I don't understand. That's you didn't try to clear. Thats what made me remember the "halfbelief" term.

So yes, there are misunderstanding, but in some other things ;)
Would you explain that to me so I wouldn't make some wrong conclusions anymore, please?

Sure, I'm certainly nowhere near the center of the Minetest world, but I AM the only one that mentioned building with apples. You said the same people who wanted realism were talking about building with apples, but this, to the best of my knowledge, is not true.

As for my butting into this topic, it's an attempt to help prevent things from getting messed up too badly. My one voice doesn't matter that much, but last time a topic like this (where I thought "I like the way it is and I think most people agree with me") popped up, I ignored it as not a threat. Then, there was an overwhelming support for the change, and I wished I had spoken up before it was too late. I wouldn't have been able to make a difference, and everything turned out fine in the end, but I should have spoken up. This time, I am.

You say the apples in tree hollows bothers me, but I never said that. I said I'd thought about a leaves with apple node. The reason for this being that a texture pack someone wanted me to try textured default:apple as leaves with an apple. They were trying to make it look better in the tree, which they managed to do, but they also made it loo funny out of the tree. It made me think that if there was a leave with apple node for in the tree and a regular apple node for out of the tree, we could have the best of both worlds. The current method does not bother me in the slightest though. I do not mind them not decaying. Although, I do wish people would clean up after themselves (floating apples, dropped saplings, stacks of cobble to get to high places, et cetera).

I mainly brought it up even just to support my side of the argument. My reasons for wanting things are often obscure, and difficult to get support for. But by bringing up reasons that other people are more likely to care about, even if they have nothing to do with my personal reasons, I stand a fighting chance in debates.

I have a big problem with apples in trees, after some time of play all trees have all spaces with apples and flowers... :-o
