Domination

I have written a new game for Minetest, this server is the beta/introduction to that game.

Players divide into 4 teams and try to take control of certain points in the map. Once a team has control of a point their domination meter starts increasing. For each domination point a team has control of the faster their domination meter increases.

This is based on the vanilla game with a few changes
  • Mese has been removed
  • Some tools have been slowed down to make built fortifications more effective (e.g. mining stone with a pick is fast, but mining cobble with a pick is slowed down so forts built out of cobble will be stronger)
  • Tool speeds have been changed to force you to use the appropriate tool on certain nodes, the pick is no longer the most powerful tool. The pick is slower on dirt and sand than the shovel, the pick is slower on a tree than an axe, etc...
  • Locked chests are available to the placer's whole team
  • On death all inventory items are dropped on the ground
  • Steel doors are accessible by everybody on the team

Gameplay
The game is manually started by an admin. Before the game starts players start in a predefined spawn point with no inventory, there they can join teams, chat, etc... Once the game starts players are teleported to their team spawn point. If they log out and log back in they will start back at their team spawn area. Players do not have to be online when the game starts. The game runs 24/7 until a team reaches the domination goal, so having players online as much as possible helps your team. Once the games start then it's a free-for-all. Teams need to come up with a strategy whether that's having certain people mine and gather resources, others scout and capture domination points, having some build fortifications, etc... When a domination point is claimed a sound is played and a chat notification is sent to all players giving an approximate coordinate of the claimed domination pointed.

The goal for this Domination server is 3600 points. A team receives 1 point every 5 seconds for each point they control. This setup has 5 or 6 domination points (I don't remember exactly), placed randomly throughout the map.

In general the Domination game can be played and setup several ways, and this is all up to whoever designs the map:
  • Multiple domination points throughout the map
  • One domination points (King of the Hill)
  • Put a domination point at each team spawn

Commands
/teams - lists the teams and who is on each team
/join <team> - joins a team. After the game starts you cannot switch teams
/tc <message> - sends a chat message only to the people on your team
/game_stat - shows the percentage of the domination goal each team has

  • Farming

The plan is to start the game Saturday morning around 9am Central Time.

I like this concept, but i think you can make it a bit better :)

Also make sure there is a way to create cool so i can have red wool to claim my team's color.
Ah uhh place more domination points and limit maybe i dunno

4 teams is too much I think, it needs at least 8 players to be playable... 3 teams would probably be better (6 players are much easier to get :P).

Thanks for the feedback. I agree it can be better, and will get better. I got it to a point I thought it had all of the features that it needs to potentially be fun but it's not complete.

The map is ready and the server is ready for people to hop on and join a team to prepare for the game start tomorrow. I did not mention above that the game play is limited to a predefined arena, it's roughly 400 x 500.

The walls are a indestructible block

Once a player joins a team their skin changes, and I modified 3d Armor to use the appropriate team skin as the base when layering the armor

I've never tried to get a multiplayer PvP game going so we'll see what the turnout is. This game may be too big for a small community, and even if we were able to get 20-30 people my server might crash :)

It has the wool mod from minetest_game and PilzAdam farming but I didn't install unified dyes, without that I'm not sure how you go about dying wool. I added a locked chest for each team at spawn that has 5 stacks of wool in their team color

i fell off the spawn area and survived and decided to test out the different times and i found out that the wood pick does not dig stone. hve you actually tested the tool cahnges

I don't think I tested the wood tool changes... give me a bit and I'll fix that.

i suggest for the next map you make it small with prebuilt bases and make it like 100x100. so it is more like a war. the current size is too big.(especially if you have to travel for at least a minute to find your first tree)

This server is no longer online. If I continue to develop the domination game I'll put it back online, but I don't have the time right now.
