[Newbie] Cobblestone won't group in inventory

When I mine cobblestone it shows up once, but when I try to mine another cobblestone it doesn't group in the inventory. The only time I can have more than one cobblestone is if one is already in the crafting area.

I just started playing the game so pardon me if I don't know very much.

Now I'm having a similar problem with the trees

You must be playing in "creative mode". Try disabling the creative mode checkbox before starting the game.
