Abuse in Off-Topic

by Ragnar » Thu May 30, 2013 13:57

http://www.webopedia.com/ wrote:In online forums an off-topic discussion area may be available to users. This area of the forum is designated for general chat and posting of messages that may be different than the general topic focus of the forum. For example, on an electronic commerce forum there may be a designated thread or section where users can post messages not related to electronic commerce.

My question:
Why do my off-topic posts get removed? Minetest's* Off topic is for stuff non-related to Minetest, so what am i doing wrong that others aren't?

The forum rules also apply to the Offtopic forum, so topics may be taken down if they violate them.

How did i violate any rules by:
Suggesting a free Android game to others;
Asking for others Skype names, if they are interested in playing it with me.

The Rulebook wrote:By registering, you agree to act suitably (like on any other forum; e.g. not posting illegal content (according to the Finnish and German law) or pornography, no flooding, no spamming, no viruses and such) and acknowledge that the moderators can ban you for not doing so, or for any other reason.

Graphical smileys are disallowed. Animated avatars are disallowed.

If you are underage, ask your parents whether registering is legal in your country.

In any event you are responsible for your posts, and the other users are responsible for their posts, not the operators of this forum.

You also agree that this forum can be moved to a different host and a different country (might be needed if the traffic increases a lot), including the user account data.

The language of this forum is english, except for the "other languages" section.

These conditions may change in the future without notice.

I don't see anything about promoting games/programs etc. being not allowed;
I also don't see asking for people's skype names, or any kind of service usernames in this case, being not allowed.

I made a few (a lot of?) mods for minetest: here is a list.
See also the MT-Faithful texture pack (work in progress).

It may be hard, but not impossible.
Its much harder to find a new home.
You can always:
Delete un-needed accounts
Delete un-needed blogs/websites
#Facebook:
Set permissions on who can access certain information...

I beg the differ...

1.Suggesting Games and or Advertising in some way might bring people to harmful viruses that might be hidden in the codes, the internet can't be really trusted.
2.Asking Skype names is like telling people to give away their personal information, even its the sake for entertainment. Its still very risky, even how many people trust you.
3.THREATENING THE SITE TO CRASH is much more of an offense and you nearly crossed the line.

Not all of the rules are stated in the Rulebook and it CAN CHANGE WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE.

Just posting randomly about some game that is completely irrelevant sounds like spam to me. I don't go around posting topics about Xonotic or MegaGlest. If I did, it would make perfect sense if these topics got deleted.

Skype is a bad service to be dependent on. It uses solely non-standard protocols instead of perfectly good open standards, which means only Skype users can talk to Skype users. This attack on interoperability is a strategic decision by Microsoft. In any case, asking people who do have a Skype account for their Skype username is a lot more personal than asking what country people live in. Unless your answer is Vatican City, it doesn't say much about your identity or even location. A Skype username is a lot more like a phone number than what country you live in (the main difference being that phones are interoperable).

Its on the Google Play store, so i doubt it has malware and/or viruses...

Don't understand your statement...

Skype uses peer2peer... I know that, cause Skype was made here, in Estonia...

Actually, it can use both peer-to-peer and a client-server model, but how does that have anything to do with what I said? I said that the protocol it uses is nonstandard, and that applies to the protocol it uses for peer-to-peer communication, too.

No. Peer-to-peer just describes a general method of data transmission: from and to equal peers rather than a master server. Torrents are an example of something that uses peer-to-peer networking.
