I should have set this up years ago. But it's no tale of woe.
Whether the temperature is high or low, regardless of cold winds blow,
away we go like Edgar Allan Poe, on now with the show. BTW rhymes are welcome.
This is a well known problem that needs immediate attention. The new players to minetest should have to put a username into the text box. well you may ask, "What issues does the automatic naming of minetest client connects cause?" the issue with the guests is the lack of dicernability between them. (The so called random numbers at the end of these names tend to stop in the 7000's or 5000's) this can lead to people getting banned in innocence while those who did it remain. Not all people have idedic memories for numbers and immediate knowledge of the players username. On my server it has gotten to the point where I immediately and swiftly ban the guest users without so much as a thought. If a person is too lazy to set their own username, they shouldn't be in the communal environment of a server.
I agree with this. Not the banning part, but you know! the naming! +1

That's right. The naming is confusing. Most new players most likely don't even realize they're called Guest1234 etc. Usually, one plays with the same username on diffrent servers. It would be great if the game could ask for a name first.
... it's annoying because it isn't consistent. That's why it should be removed. Hail to the original days of Minetest 0.4!

I agree, I have been tempted to to write a mod that sends a chat message to any user with Guest in their name to tell them to log in with a "real" name, then ban them or removes all permissions or something. I routinely delete all Guest* player files just to keep the players directory a little more tidy.
