Minetest fansite

by mauvebic » Sat Feb 04, 2012 15:07

Im looking at another six month term of unemployment until the start of school so i decided to kick off a project.

Without making any judgements i find minetest information fragmented and dispersed, without really knowing what's up to date. So i thought to myself, what would be the opposite of that? A website that's just one page, with expanding sections representing every point of interest. The sections i have so far are: Screenshots, Servers, Mods, and i'm thinking of adding a crafting/tutorial section.

Every entry in each section is dated, and rate-able. With the option of sorting entries by one or the other.

I was also thinking of coding a function to check weather public servers are actually up or not.

Any thoughts? can post screenshots of progress.

Im not a huge fan of wiki software (i find it makes every other website look the same).

Mind you i come from a time where table-based designs were the shit and DHTML was the next big thing (lol)

Wiki is good for searching and connecting articles and community editing. A site is good for static information or frequently added news.

Wikis are websites with PHP and SQL. What i'm doing isn't that much different. Except i'm avoiding generalized content management systems and creating my own tools and style.

Look i dont mind linking to your wiki, but im here to code my own site, not write articles.

Fixed, and now lists as up :-)
mind you, it's worth noting anybody will be able to list a server without having to register an account. (just chose a password for the listing itself)

just set a password to edit/delete a server listing. no registrations, accounts or emails. (much simpler)

Im going to try and keep downtime statistics so i can clean up the list regularly (making the checks shorter)

I Like so far the design of your site

But on your sample screenshot you show redcrab.suret.net that is down ... very strange because it is very rarely down ...

I'll have to set the timeout higher. Its hard for me to check results since my minetest has trouble connecting to most of the servers.
