Convert Singleplayer game to Server game

by Darkbee » Tue Jul 09, 2013 13:10

As the subject says, is there a way to take a singleplayer game and make it playable as a server (either LAN or public)? Primarily, the biggest issue is assigning owners to objects like locked chests and doors. If I take a singleplayer game and play it on a LAN, then locked chests belong to "singleplayer" and so nobody can actually open them. Maybe it's not possible and that's okay. I was just curious.
Minetest [mahyntest]
adjective
1. The most superior block sandbox game. Have you played Minetest? It's the minetest!
2. The greatest in quantity. I scored the minetest haul of Mese last night when mining!

The map can be used for a multiplayer server, but as you say, locked stuff may be a problem.
I just coded a mod for the lulz.

Behold teh awsum Owner Change Stick!!

Just install the mod as usual, get the "Owner Change Stick" from creative inventory, and hit a locked chest with it. It will bring up a dialog where you can change who owns the chest. Should also theoretically work with any kind of owned stuff (like homedecor locked fridges and even protector blocks). It's suggested you remove this mod when it's not needed, should untrusted players get ahold of the stick, you'll have some problems :)

Nice idea. Could help whenever there's a namechange of a player.
A list of my mods can be found here.

Thanks Kaeza! Works like a charm and who doesn't like to carry a big stick around! *sings: I've got the power!*

Poking dead people with sticks is okay. But necrophilia isn't.

I was just thinking about this some more... Isn't the singleplayer game a little redundant? Why not always play a server game, just by yourself (if you don't want to play with others)? Is there any advantage or some difference in game-play that would facilitate the need to play a specially designated "singleplayer" game?

This is how it was before until someone decided the "singleplayer" thing would be better, which it isn't IMO

AFAIK singleplayer is the same as multiplayer, except it refuses any connection from other players, and uses port 30011 instead of the default 30000.

I guess the only argument I can think of for having a dedicated "Single Player Mode" is that less technically adept users may be very confused by the idea of "setting up" a server to play a game with only one person. I guess it's not a big deal.
