healing?

I remember there used to be some trees that had apples. havn't seen them in quite some time. So i've fallen a few times and have three and a half hearts left. How do I heal my self without just doing myself in and respawning? This question is for the basic game without any mods.

You can dig up the wood from trees, and the leaves around it will die if all the wood is gone. They will drop saplings. You then have a chance of getting an apple tree.

As of 0.4.6, naturally generated trees spawn with apples (except if they spawned in areas generated when using an older version, of course).

I was thinking of a mod that healed you slowly over time, resetting the timer if you heal through other means, take damage, or do heavy work (e.g. mine something that you couldn't ordinarily mine with bare hands). Been pondering it for a while, but not sure I would really want to hack it together without the real C++ support that would be required to do it right (get events when any of this stuff happens).
