Dynamic shadows

by MirceaKitsune » Fri Jun 03, 2011 13:04

Has anyone thought of adding realtime shadows to minetest, following the position of the sun / moon and torches? C++ and Irrlicht should easily support such a thing, and it would look prettier than the current lightning technique. That of course, if calculating shadows for millions of blocks does not kill the framerate :P What do you think?

Gratz on a Old Thread Bump ¬.¬ *Sarcastic*

Dynamic Lighting would Kill Frame Rate Drasticly, Not to mention Older Systems that can run minetest currently probably wont be able to.

I'm the necromancer and this is 2015. Hasn't 3 years of technological progress brought us to the point where someone could implement this ?

Some mods dislike necroposting, but I think you did well since this is a feature worthy to keep discussing. Thankfully, RealBadAngel has dynamic lighting on his TODO list, which will allow realtime shadows as well.

Great to hear, shadows like those add so, so much visual quality to the table. It's something that can make the game stand out.

IIRC, RealBadAngel (our audiovisual magician) is planning to add the Irrlicht real lighting (and therefore the dynamic shadows) in the near future.

Freeminer apparently features dynamic (stencil) shadows for entities and players.
